Comrade Nguyen Trung Ven, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Cooperative Union, said: The province has 164 cooperatives operating with 28,103 members. Of these, 123 cooperatives operate in the agricultural sector and 41 are non-agricultural cooperatives. Of the 123 agricultural cooperatives, there are 20 aquaculture cooperatives, 04 livestock cooperatives and 99 crop cooperatives. Of the 20 aquaculture cooperatives, there are 09 clam farming cooperatives; 07 shrimp farming cooperatives; 03 blood cockle farming cooperatives and 01 mussel farming cooperative. In recent years, agricultural cooperatives have contributed significantly to job creation, increasing income for members and people, and promoting local economic development.
However, the operation of aquaculture cooperatives has encountered many difficulties, especially the high investment costs for shrimp farming, while cooperatives lack capital for production investment. The application of science and technology in production by members is not uniform. The price of commercial shrimp is unstable, the connection between members in cooperatives is not tight and unsustainable. The leadership and management capacity of some cooperatives is still limited.
In addition, the clam farming situation in the 2023 - 2024 crop year faces many difficulties in the consumption of commercial clams due to low market prices. The cause of the mass death of clams in some cooperatives is still unclear. The linkage between enterprises and cooperatives in clam consumption still has many obstacles that have not been implemented. The impact of climate change and unstable quality of seed, ...
In the coming time, the Provincial Cooperative Union will support capacity building for cooperatives in organizational development. Capacity building for cooperatives in business development and market development. Support export enterprises in investing in seafood and agricultural product processing factories in the province. Capacity building for cooperatives in business development and market development; support export enterprises in investing in seafood and agricultural product processing factories in the province; support cooperatives in increasing the representativeness and participation of women and youth. Support cooperatives in developing capital sources through mobilizing internal financial resources or external support and loans.
Mr. Dang Xuan Thao, Director of Phuong Dong Clam Cooperative, Nha Mat Hamlet, Truong Long Hoa Commune, Duyen Hai Town, said: The Cooperative operates in the clam and mussel farming business with 510 members (2008). Up to now, the Cooperative has 241 members participating with a farming area of 211.6 hectares and a charter capital of over 2.9 billion VND. In the clam farming cycle, farmers/members of Phuong Dong Cooperative release clams, harvest, screen, classify, and sell to the market.
The current difficulty of the cooperative is that the salinity changes continuously during the day, month, and year (the salinity difference is very large). The increase in temperature reduces the survival rate of clams, and productivity is increasingly affected by snails eating clams or killing clams. On the other hand, the cooperative does not have a working office to stabilize production and business operations. The cooperative's management and operation capacity is still limited, and the output market is unstable.
According to Mr. Dang Xuan Thao, in the 2025 - 2030 period, the Cooperative will invest in processing to increase the value of clam products; increase annual clam production by 20%; improve and apply farming techniques to adapt to climate change. To achieve the above goals, the Cooperative hopes that the province as well as Agriterra Organization in Vietnam will support in improving the management and operation capacity of the cooperative model (cooperative governance, finance, building annual business plans). Consulting on measures and building a plan for clam farming to adapt to climate change. Consulting on improving leadership capacity for the youth and women in the Cooperative to promote deeper participation of this group in the Cooperative's operational activities.
At the consultation conference on project implementation in 04 provinces of the Mekong Delta, Comrade Chau Van Hoa, Member of the Provincial Party Committee, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee highly appreciated the efforts of Agriterra Organization in Vietnam and the Provincial Cooperative Union in coordinating to develop a plan to implement the project to improve the professionalism of fisheries cooperatives in Tra Vinh province for the period 2024 - 2026.
The major goals set by the project for the 2024-2026 period in supporting the development of cooperatives in the Mekong Delta in general and Tra Vinh province in particular are very suitable to practical conditions, meeting the needs of cooperatives. Accordingly, the province directs the Cooperative Union, provincial departments, branches and localities to coordinate with Agriterra in Vietnam in implementation.
