Actively changing crops

Thanks to her bold decision to switch from rice cultivation to rose farming, Mrs. Nong Thi Tan, a Giay ethnic minority member from Hamlet 12, Bat Xat town, Bat Xat district, has achieved a more prosperous life.

Mrs. Nong Thi Tan's family owns 5 sao (approximately 0.5 hectares) of rice paddies. Because the paddies are located higher than the irrigation canal, they had to invest in a separate pipeline to bring water for rice cultivation. Despite the high costs, the income from rice farming was only enough for basic needs, with no surplus. At the end of 2020, Mrs. Tan boldly converted 2 sao of her paddies to experimentally cultivate 4,200 miniature rose bushes.

In the early days, lacking experience in flower care, when the seedlings were about to bud, they were affected by powdery mildew, resulting in a low flowering rate and small flowers. Undeterred, she actively participated in flower care training courses organized by the local authorities. She also asked her children to research information online and visited specialized flower-growing areas in other provinces to learn from their experience. As a result, her flower garden gradually developed well, with healthy plants and consistent, beautiful blooms. From the second harvest, she earned 14 million VND, significantly more than her previous income from rice cultivation.

Seeing the clear positive results, Ms. Tan continued to expand her flower cultivation area to the remaining 3 acres of land with 3,000 velvet rose bushes – a variety favored by the market for its deep red color, large blooms, and distinctive fragrance. Thanks to her accumulated experience, caring for the flowers became easier. From the second year onwards, the plants grew steadily, bloomed year-round, and produced abundant flowers.

Seeing the success of Ms. Nong Thi Tan's flower garden, many local households have also begun to take an interest in growing flowers to replace some of their rice fields or other less productive crops. Besides selling flowers, Ms. Tan is also willing to share her experience and provide technical support to other farmers who want to switch to this production model.
