Ms. Nong Thi Tan's family has 5 sao of rice fields, the position of the fields is higher than the irrigation canal, so they have to invest in a separate pipeline to bring water to grow rice. Although the cost is high, the income from rice cultivation is only enough for rice, not enough. At the end of 2020, Ms. Tan boldly converted 2 sao of rice fields to test planting 4,200 rose bushes.

In the early days, she had no experience in taking care of the flowers. When the flowers sprouted and were about to bud, they were affected by powdery mildew, the flowering rate was low, and the flowers were small. Not discouraged, she actively participated in training courses on flower care techniques organized by the locality. She also asked her children to find information on the Internet and went directly to flower growing areas in other provinces to learn from their experiences. Thanks to that, the flower garden gradually developed well, the plants were healthy, and the flowers bloomed evenly and beautifully. From the second crop of flowers, she earned 14 million VND, much higher than when she grew rice before.

Seeing the obvious results, Ms. Tan continued to expand the flower growing area in the remaining 3 fields with 3,000 velvet rose bushes - a flower variety favored by the market for its deep red color, large flowers and distinctive fragrance. Thanks to the accumulated experience, flower care also became easier. From the second year, the plants grew steadily, flowering all year round and blooming many flowers.

Seeing the effectiveness of Mrs. Nong Thi Tan’s flower garden, many local households have also begun to be interested in growing flowers to replace part of the rice fields or other ineffective crops. In addition to selling flowers, Mrs. Tan is also willing to share her experience and provide technical support to other farming households who want to change their production model.
