According to The Verge , Naughty Dog recently announced that they have canceled the multiplayer game project that was being built in the The Last of Us universe.
The developer said that although they were in the pre-production stage of The Last of Us Online, while working on The Last of Us Part II , maintaining the online multiplayer version would require a lot of resources and manpower, seriously affecting the development of future single-player games.
Naughty Dog was faced with two choices: either become a live service studio or continue to pursue its strengths as a content-rich single-player game. In the end, the developer chose the latter path and confirmed that it is working on several promising new titles.
The Last of Us Online Cancelled to Focus on Single-Single-Player Games
Speaking of The Last of Us Online, it seemed like the game's development was in some trouble when Naughty Dog announced a delay in May, shortly after Bloomberg reported that Sony was reevaluating its direction. Then in October, a Kotaku report said that Naughty Dog was laying off several contractors, which also said that The Last of Us Online was in a precarious state.
The cancellation of The Last of Us Online further demonstrates Sony’s growing retreat from its live service game ambitions. Instead of releasing 12 live service games by March 2026, it now plans to release just six.
The Last of Us Part II Remastered is set to release on January 19, 2024, followed by the second season of the HBO hit in 2025.
