Nguyen Tran Uyen Khang, a student at Ho Chi Minh City International School – American Academy (ISHCMC-AA), has just completed the university entrance exam with a dream result: accepted into most of the universities she applied to: Purdue University, University of Maryland (top 4 Information Science majors in the US), University of Washington Seattle, prestigious UC systems such as UC San Diego, UC Irvine, UC Davis and many other major schools such as Penn State, Rutgers, Ohio State, Michigan State.
Uyen Khang has reaped the "sweet fruit" with an acceptance rate from American universities reaching nearly 100%.
The difference is that Khang did not have a favorite subject or a clear dream career from the beginning. Khang confessed: "I used to feel pressured, because I felt like I was moving slower than others."
However, instead of rushing to find an answer right away, Khang chose to listen to himself through each experience, from talking to teachers, asking for family opinions to trying new activities. The open learning environment at ISHCMC–AA, where students are encouraged to express their own opinions and develop in their own way, has created conditions for Khang to confidently explore and understand himself better.
Uyen Khang received listening, sharing and support from teachers at school to understand herself better.
Khang participates in extracurricular activities, prioritizing quality over quantity. He participated in ESTV, aneducational project on sustainable tourism, with the task of developing ideas, communication content, and designing interactive activities for students to participate in. He also participated in ƯƠM - a fundraising program in collaboration with social organizations to support primary school students in the northern mountainous region. In addition, during the summer, Khang proactively registered to become a volunteer SAT tutor on the Schoolhouse.world platform.
"Every time I participate in an activity, I ask myself: What can I learn from this? What does this activity help me understand more about myself?" Khang said. It is this slow but selective approach that helps me naturally shape my passion.
Uyen Khang always actively participates in extracurricular activities and social organizations.
Not only with social activities, Khang’s academic journey also has a spirit of daring to try. History teacher Zach encouraged him to try AP World History in the AP (Advanced Placement) program, even though Khang had never studied this subject in depth before, creating a premise for him to continue challenging himself with many other advanced subjects in the AP program. Thanks to the systematic teaching method of the AP program and the team of experienced and highly specialized teachers at ISHCMC–AA, Khang completed the subjects well.
In addition, Mr. Ryan, who teaches Computer Science , recognized Khang’s potential in the field of Computer Science and encouraged him to pursue it further. At the same time, Khang’s older brother, a former ISHCMC-AA student, is currently studying International Relations, and is also the person who inspired Khang to study and shape his social perspective. The motivation from teachers and family has given Khang the confidence to better understand his own interests and abilities, so that he can develop in his own direction.
After the experience, Khang realized that he was attracted to psychology and technology. When he learned about Information Science, especially the research direction of Human-Computer Interaction, Khang understood that he no longer had to choose between these two seemingly separate passions. Information Science is the ideal intersection to create more intimate, effective and humane technology experiences.
It is the clarity of his goals, along with his consistent academic personality, that has helped him receive acceptance letters from a series of prestigious universities in the US. What is more valuable is that Khang clearly understands where he is going and why. After college, he plans to continue his master's degree in the field of UX Research and hopes to return to Vietnam to work, contribute to the development of domestic technology, and promote equality in user experience in Asia compared to the West.
Looking back, what Khang is proud of is not only the admission result, but also the way he has matured little by little, from a student who "didn't know what he liked" to a young person who understands himself and knows what value he wants to create in society. For Khang, maturity does not come from having a ready-made answer, but from the journey to find that answer with all the perseverance, courage and confidence of youth.
