Flooded students borrow pairs of notebooks, urgently request new books

After the historic flood swept through the eastern communes and wards of Dak Lak province, many schools were deeply inundated, thousands of student books were swept away or completely damaged by water. On the days back to class, the sight of students having to borrow a few sheets of paper from their friends to copy their lessons made teachers and parents feel heartbroken.

Ms. To Thi Kieu Oanh, a teacher at La Hai Primary School, said that this morning, many teachers and parents went to the school library to find books to temporarily distribute to students. However, the number of books in reserve is very limited, not enough to meet the large number of students who lost books after the flood.

“There are children who come to class without even a notebook and have to borrow paper from their friends to take notes. Many teachers try to collect old books from the library but there are not many left. It is so heartbreaking to see the children like this. I hope that benefactors will pay attention and support books and notebooks for the children so that they can study normally again,” said Ms. Oanh.

La Hai Primary School has 641 students, but after the flood, 210 of them lost all their books. The water rose so quickly that many families were unable to react. The textbooks and notebooks that parents had painstakingly bought at the beginning of the year were now just piles of faded, sticky paper.

In Phuoc Hue village, Dong Xuan commune, Mr. Ngo Quang Phap, a parent with two children in grades 2 and 9, said that despite placing furniture high, the floodwaters rose almost to the ceiling, damaging all of his children's books and bicycles.

“I can only watch the water rise hour by hour. Now the kids go to school without anything in their bags, I don’t know what to do,” Mr. Phap shared.

After the flood, the need for textbooks and notebooks for students in flooded areas is extremely urgent. Most parents have just experienced natural disasters and are financially exhausted, unable to buy books for their children. Many schools have mobilized teachers, parents and philanthropists to contribute old books and blank notebooks, but the quantity is still too small compared to the need.
