“There was no phone call. This is not true. This is fiction. This information is false,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov responded on November 11 after news broke that US President-elect Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin had a phone call shortly after the US election.
The Washington Post , citing an anonymous source, said on November 10 that Mr. Trump called Mr. Putin on November 7. According to the source, during the phone call, President-elect Trump asked the Russian leader to “not escalate” the conflict, reminding him of the significant US military presence in Europe.
In addition, Mr. Trump and Mr. Putin also talked about “the goal of peace on the European continent,” in which the US President-elect expressed interest in further conversations to talk about “an early settlement of the war in Ukraine.” The article did not provide details about the Russian side’s reaction to Mr. Trump’s proposal.
Mr. Peskov called the article a “vivid example of the quality of information published by a number of major press agencies in the United States.”
The Kremlin spokesman stressed that there are currently no specific plans for any negotiations between Mr. Putin and Mr. Trump.
Trump was re-elected as US president on November 5, defeating Democratic candidate Kamala Harris. During the campaign, he repeatedly claimed that he could end the Russia-Ukraine conflict “within 24 hours” of his election, even before he took office in January.
He once revealed his solution: he would call both Russian President Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to propose that the two sides sit down at the negotiating table. If Moscow refuses, the US will provide more weapons to Ukraine, on the contrary, if Kiev refuses, the US will immediately cut off aid to Ukraine.
In September, Mr. Trump also said: “On Inauguration Day, I will call President Vladimir Putin of Russia and tell him: let's sit down and negotiate. If he refuses, oil prices will be below $40 in a few months.”
However, Russia, which currently has the upper hand on the battlefield, has said it will only accept an outcome that addresses the core causes of the Ukrainian conflict, which Moscow says include NATO's expansion in Europe and Kiev's discriminatory policies toward ethnic Russians.
Meanwhile, Ukraine insists it will only accept a peace treaty in which Russia withdraws all troops, restores Ukraine's 1991 borders and other terms.
The policy of the incoming US administration is unclear, but President Joe Biden is working to boost aid to Ukraine in his final weeks, while calling on the next administration to continue supporting Kiev.
