The first deployment of a Russian Kilo-class submarine near the Irish Sea occurred about 18 months ago, while the second was more recent, the report said. The submarine’s range of operations was far beyond anything British officials had seen before.

US officials were also aware of the submarine's activities, according to two sources familiar with the matter.
The Kilo-class submarines are diesel-electric attack submarines capable of launching Russian Kalibr cruise missiles, as well as torpedoes and naval mines, according to Bloomberg.
In 2022, Russia has announced that its navy will conduct a series of large-scale exercises involving all its fleets from the Pacific to the Atlantic, demonstrating its military might in a confrontation with the West.
Irish Foreign Minister Simon Coveney commented at the time that the exercises were unwelcome.
Russia's Kilo-class submarines are among the quietest attack submarines in the world and have been exported to many other countries.
Kilo-class submarines are a key component of Russia's naval forces and pose a significant threat in underwater conflict situations thanks to their stealth capabilities and powerful weapons.
