Russian gas giant Gazprom said it has set a new record for gas deliveries to China in one day, via the Power of Siberia pipeline.
"On November 23, the volume of Russian gas supplied via the Power of Siberia pipeline once again exceeded the daily contracted limit. Gazprom delivered the entire required volume and set a new record for daily gas supplies to China," Gazprom said in a statement on November 25.
China is currently the main buyer of Russian natural gas. Russia supplies the product under a long-term contract between Gazprom and China’s CNPC. Since 2014, the two companies have signed a 30-year, $400 billion purchase agreement.

China currently receives most of its Russian gas via the Power of Siberia pipeline, which became partially operational in December 2019 and was the first pipeline to supply Russian gas to China. The Power of Siberia pipeline is about 3,000 kilometers long, running through Russia’s Siberia region to Heilongjiang province in northeastern China.
Last year, Russia supplied 15.5 billion cubic meters of gas to China via this pipeline. The maximum annual capacity of Power of Siberia is 38 billion cubic meters.
Russian Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak said gas supplies to China via the pipeline would reach 22 billion cubic meters this year, as Moscow steps up energy cooperation with Beijing. Earlier this month, Gazprom, China’s state-owned oil company CNPC and PipeChina signed an agreement to design and build a pipeline in the Far East to supply more Russian gas to China.
In addition to natural gas, China is also buying up global liquefied natural gas (LNG). The aim is to secure domestic supply or sell to other countries when domestic demand is weak.
