According to Tass news agency, Russia has evacuated thousands of people after a dam burst in the city of Orsk, in the Urals mountainous region.
The Russian Emergencies Ministry said 4,000 homes, home to about 10,000 people, were at risk of flooding in the Orsk suburbs, about 1,800km east of Moscow. The ministry declared a state of emergency in the Orenburg region, with 4,208 people evacuated. About 300 homes were submerged.
Local authorities have set up six evacuation points for residents. According to initial information, the dam break caused no casualties. The governor of the Orenburg region, Denis Pasler, convened an emergency meeting after the dam break. According to Mr. Pasler, this is the first time the dam has broken.
The dam was originally designed to protect the city from the waters of the Ural River. Recently, the Orsk region and other provinces in the Urals and neighboring regions of Kazakhstan have been affected by flooding.
