In the recent 2024 admission season, statistics showed that the number of candidates applying for admission to many universities using SAT and IELTS increased sharply. Dr. Le Anh Duc - Deputy Head of Training Management Department (National Economics University) said that in the 2024 admission season, more than 1,500 candidates applied for admission using SAT certificates, an increase of approximately 2.5 times compared to 2023. The average SAT score of candidates in 2024 is also higher. The top student admitted by the school's SAT group in 2024 had a score of 1,590, while the lowest admission score for this year's major was SAT 1,310. In 2023, the lowest major took SAT 1,200.

At Foreign Trade University in 2024, the number of candidates using international certificates to apply for admission to the school also increased compared to previous years. Associate Professor, Dr. Vu Thi Hien - Head of the school's Training Management Department informed that there were 196 candidates with SAT scores from 1,530/1,600, 77 students scored from 1,550. Notably, there were 2 candidates with SAT scores of 1,590.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology said that the number of applications for admission using SAT certificates combined with IELTS foreign language certificates in 2024 has increased sharply, causing the benchmark score using this method to increase. For example, in 2023, to be admitted to the two majors IT1 (Computer Science ) and IT-E10 (Data Science and Artificial Intelligence) of Hanoi University of Science and Technology using SAT certificates, candidates need to achieve 1,500 points, of which the Math score is 750 or higher. This year, Hanoi University of Science and Technology allows candidates to add bonus points for foreign language certificates to their SAT scores. Therefore, the benchmark score for the two majors has increased to 1,630, meaning that candidates must achieve a minimum of 1,550 SAT points (of which the Math score is 750 or higher) combined with an IELTS score of at least 7.0 (converted to 80 points to add to the SAT score) to be admitted to these two majors.

In Ho Chi Minh City, in the 2024 enrollment season, many major universities also have an enrollment method using SAT exam results, such as Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology (Ho Chi Minh City National University)...

The fact that schools increasingly prefer to consider the SAT is also one of the reasons why candidates flock to study for the certificate, and it is even deified as a "golden ticket" to university. Currently in Vietnam, most SAT exams are managed and organized by IIG Vietnam with the cooperation of College Board - the US educational organization that owns the SAT exam. Vietnamese students can take the SAT exam at many centers across the country, including Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City and other provinces and cities.

There are currently many concerns and worries about the "preference" for SAT for university admission. Many parents believe that schools using international certificates such as SAT will also cause many consequences, for reasons such as: assessing candidates' abilities based only on this data is not accurate; SAT certificate preparation is very expensive, students can hardly study at home like IELTS; SAT includes Math and English, must achieve about 1,400-1,500 points to be admitted to top schools. Many students study for a whole year, the amount of money their parents have to spend can be up to hundreds of millions of VND but still cannot get that score.

Notably, with the SAT, College Board representatives recommend that candidates should not retake the test too many times. The ideal number of times should be 2. This organization also advises that students who plan to apply for university admission using SAT scores can prepare from middle school with the PSAT. The age group that can start taking the PSAT is grades 8-9. Meanwhile, the SAT should start in grade 12.

Mr. Phan Minh Duc - Academic Director of Future Class analyzed that SAT is not a language test but a test of logical and critical thinking skills, so it is necessary to have a clear view of SAT. Therefore, studying is a daily accumulation, it is necessary to learn about the exam, have a specific roadmap, and clearly outline the time period in which you can study for SAT. In other words, SAT is a stepping stone to develop thinking skills, not just for university admission.

SAT (short for Scholastic Aptitude Test) is one of the most popular standardized tests, used by universities in the US and some other countries to select students. SAT is a standardized test organized by the College Board with two main goals: to test what students have learned in high school, and to test students' readiness for college. The rate of candidates using SAT certificates to apply to universities in Vietnam is increasing.
