Family is the cell of society, an important environment for forming, nurturing andeducating human personality. In Vietnamese culture, filial piety is considered an important moral foundation in every family.

Good family makes good society

These days, many localities across the country are enthusiastically organizing activities to celebrate Vietnamese Family Day June 28.

Vietnam Family Day 2024 with the theme "Happy Family, Prosperous Nation" aims at the sustainable development of families in the new era, honoring the cultural traditions of families in the community of Vietnamese ethnic groups.

According to Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Trinh Thi Thuy, since 2001, the Prime Minister has decided to choose June 28 every year as Vietnamese Family Day to further emphasize the role and position of the family as well as the responsibility of all levels, sectors and the whole society in building civilized, equal, progressive and happy families. Thereby, localities and the whole society promote the protection, care and education of children, contributing to building and protecting the Fatherland, because the family is the cell of society, without good families, there can be no good society.

This is also a day to honor the traditional humanistic values of Vietnamese families, so that everyone in the family can show more concern for each other, love, share and respect.

In particular, Vietnamese people turn to their roots and relatives, nurturing beautiful feelings and noble cultural values of the nation. No matter where they go or what they do, family is still a loving home, a peaceful place for everyone to return to.

When talking about the role of family, President Ho Chi Minh affirmed: “It is right to pay great attention to family, because many families together make up a society. If society is good, families are better, and if families are good, society is good. The nucleus of society is the family.”

Researchers also point out that the family is the cell of society, an important environment for forming, nurturing and educating personality, preserving and promoting good traditional culture, fighting against social evils, creating human resources to serve the cause of building and defending the Fatherland. Therefore, a good family is a guarantee for a rich people, a strong country, a healthy and civilized society.

However, under the impact of the international integration process and the negative effects of the market mechanism, the relationship between family members is increasingly loose, and the lifestyle emphasizes individualism.

Some moral values such as filial piety, loyalty... have degraded, causing many Vietnamese families to face the risk of instability and breakdown, directly affecting the development of society.

Therefore, improving the quality of relationships in Vietnamese families and supporting the building of happy and sustainable families is extremely necessary.

Filial piety - the quintessence of Vietnamese family culture

Family is considered the cradle, the first school to educate morality and personality for each family member. Filial piety is one of the good moral values, the bond that connects family members through many generations.

Throughout the history of the nation, filial piety plays a fundamental role in spiritual life, holding an important position and deciding family and social relationships.

According to cultural researchers, the essence of filial piety is gratitude imbued in the consciousness of every Vietnamese child. A nation with a firm belief in its roots, in grandparents, parents and previous generations.

A nation that takes respect for parents, grandparents, and ancestors as the most important thing, and takes filial piety as the way of life... That is the morality, a very humane way of life that the Vietnamese people have built over thousands of years of history.

Vietnamese people all over the world, through many generations, have a tendency to worship their ancestors. Vietnamese people have a tradition of worshiping their family ancestors (from 5 generations down), their clan ancestors, village ancestors, village gods, craft ancestors, and the national ancestor Hung Vuong.

This is a profound expression of Vietnamese filial piety towards grandparents and parents, those who have raised them, shown the way for the next generation, and directed them towards a better and happier future...

Nowadays, filial piety is not only expressed through the custom of worshiping ancestors, grandparents, parents, and village and profession founders, but it is also expanded through the teachings of President Ho Chi Minh: Loyalty to the country, filial piety to the people.

The custom of ancestor worship in general in every Vietnamese family has been passed down since ancient times and is a vivid manifestation of Vietnamese filial piety.

From that special way of expressing gratitude, the Vietnamese people have formed a culture and civilization with its own character and identity: Vietnamese civilization from filial piety. From there, a strong cultural character is created in the social consciousness to receive global civilization.

Through thousands of years of cultivation, Vietnamese lifestyle and beliefs have become steadfast and resilient in the face of all historical ups and downs. That lifestyle has become a “religion” and has a core value that makes up the quintessence of Vietnamese culture - that is “Filial piety.”

Thanks to the foundation of the consciousness of filial piety and ancestor worship, the worship in each village, each family or in Vietnamese community groups has become a bond that connects people together.

Nowadays, filial piety is not only limited to the family but also extends to social organizations, through movements such as "Repaying gratitude", "When drinking water, remember its source", caring for relatives of war invalids, martyrs, people with revolutionary contributions, the elderly, the lonely...

Therefore, in order to carry out the task of preserving and promoting the traditional moral values of Vietnamese families, propagating and enhancing the value of filial piety to contribute to building a civilized, prosperous, and happy Vietnamese family... is an urgent and important task in the current period.

Because a prosperous and happy family is the foundation for building a stable and developed society, as the theme of Vietnamese Family Day emphasized "Happy family, prosperous nation."./.
