International Family Day: Celebrating the value of intergenerational connection.

May 15th each year is designated by the United Nations as International Family Day to honor the role of the family in social life.
Officially recognized by the United Nations General Assembly since 1993, this day has become an occasion for countries to promote values of love, sharing, responsibility, and bonding among family members.
In many countries, International Family Day is celebrated with cultural, educational , and community programs aimed at raising awareness of the role of the family in sustainable development.
In Vietnam, the family has long been considered the foundation of socio-cultural life. Many movements such as "Culturally Advanced Family," building a cultural life in residential areas, and programs for caring for children and the elderly have been widely implemented.
The last examination of the Confucian examination system in Vietnam.
On May 15, 1919, the Nguyen dynasty held the final examination of Vietnam's traditional examination system, bringing to an end hundreds of years of Confucian-based examinations across the feudal dynasties.
This examination concluded with 7 third-class doctoral graduates and 16 associate doctoral graduates. This is considered a significant transitional milestone in the history of Vietnamese education, as the Quốc ngữ script and the Western education system gradually replaced the Chinese and Nôm scripts under French colonial rule.
For centuries, the examination system played a crucial role in selecting talented individuals for the state apparatus and contributed to the formation of Vietnam's cultural and academic heritage. Many prominent cultural figures and great scholars of the nation emerged from this examination system.
Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers' Day
On May 15, 1941, during the 8th Central Committee Conference held in Pac Bo (Cao Bang), the Central Committee of the Party instructed the National Salvation Youth Union to organize the Young Pioneers and the Children's National Salvation Association. This is considered the founding date of the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers today.
Born amidst the national liberation revolution entering a new phase, the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers Organization became a large-scale children's education organization, closely associated with many patriotic movements and social activities throughout history.
Throughout its history, the organization has gone through various names such as the National Children's Salvation Association, the August Children's Team, and the Vietnam Young Pioneers Team before being named the Ho Chi Minh Young Pioneers Team. To this day, this organization still plays an important role in the education and training of children and young people.
Establishment of the Vietnam Liberation Army
On May 15, 1945, at Cho Chu (Thai Nguyen), the founding ceremony of the Vietnam Liberation Army was held in accordance with the Resolution of the Northern Military Revolutionary Conference. This was a relatively well-organized revolutionary armed force, laying the foundation for the later birth of the Vietnam People's Army.
The ceremony was attended by many revolutionary leaders such as Vo Nguyen Giap and Tran Dang Ninh. After their establishment, the Liberation Army detachments quickly participated in seizing power in many localities before and during the August Revolution of 1945.
From its initial limited numbers and equipment, the Vietnam Liberation Army gradually matured through revolutionary warfare, becoming the core of the Vietnam People's Army in subsequent resistance wars.
A large rally celebrating the day of national reunification.
On May 15, 1975, millions of people in Hanoi, Saigon - Gia Dinh, and many other localities across the country took to the streets to participate in rallies and parades celebrating the historic victory: the complete liberation of the South and the reunification of the country.
In Hanoi alone, approximately 700,000 people participated in activities celebrating the victory. The atmosphere was filled with flags, banners, and large parades on many streets, reflecting the joy of reunification after more than 20 years of national division and protracted war.
In Saigon - Gia Dinh, rallies, mass cultural events, and marches also took place enthusiastically. Many historical documents record images of people pouring into the streets in an atmosphere of emotion and excitement as the war ended.
Vietnam joins Interpol.
On May 15, 1991, the Vietnamese government authorized the Ministry of Interior (now the Ministry of Public Security) to join the International Criminal Police Organization (Interpol). A few days later, the Interpol Vietnam Office was established under the General Department of People's Police.
Joining Interpol marks a significant development in the international cooperation of the Vietnamese police force, especially in the context of increasing transnational crime and the process of opening up and integrating into the international community.
Through Interpol, Vietnam has access to international data systems on crime, wanted persons, and regional security, and can cooperate in investigating many major cases related to drug trafficking, economic crimes, high-tech crimes, and apprehending criminals who have fled abroad.
Pierre Curie and his world-renowned scientific family.
May 15, 1859 is the birthday of Pierre Curie, the famous French scientist who, along with his wife Marie Curie, received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1903 for their research on radioactivity.
The Curie couple discovered the elements polonium and radium, marking a turning point for modern physics and chemistry. After Pierre Curie's death in 1906, Marie Curie continued their research and won the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1911.
Their daughter, Irène Joliot-Curie, and her husband also received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1935 for their discovery of artificial radioactivity. The Curie name was later given to a unit of radioactivity measurement, recognizing the family's significant contribution to world science.
