Nghe An: Do not be subjective before African swine fever recurs in many places

Don Phuc Commune is the locality currently suffering from the most complicated African swine fever epidemic in Con Cuong District in particular and the province in general. Being present in Don Phuc Commune on May 14, it shows that the local government has not yet implemented the disease prevention and control work drastically.

Mr. Lang Vi Dong in Phuc village said that at the beginning of March 2025, his family was raising 1 sow and 6 breeding pigs. The pigs were infected with the disease, forcing the entire herd weighing 347kg to be destroyed.

“The reason the pigs were infected with the disease was probably because the family had previously used leftover food from local shops to feed the pigs; or the family had slaughtered pigs together. Immediately after the outbreak, the commune provided 1 liter of chemicals for the family to spray disinfectant inside and outside the barn area. Feeling uneasy, the family bought another liter of chemicals to treat the environment. At the same time, the family used lime powder to sprinkle in the barn area. Up to now, the family has not dared to re-herd because the disease is occurring in many households in the commune,” said Mr. Lang Vi Dong.

Mr. Lu Ngoc Chi - Vice Chairman of the People's Committee of Don Phuc Commune said: At the beginning of 2025, the whole commune had 3,200 pigs, raised by people in 6/6 villages. From the beginning of March to mid-May, there were 47 households with pigs infected with the disease, with a total of 157 pigs having to be destroyed, with a total weight of 5,741 kg. Of which, 38 sows, 2 boars, 69 pigs and 48 piglets. Currently, the epidemic is complicated and difficult to control, the most recent outbreak was on May 9.

The commune has received and provided 130 liters of disinfectant chemicals to the people, and more than 3 tons of lime powder for people to treat the environment. However, the difficulty for the locality is that the commune does not have veterinary staff, so when a new epidemic occurs, the local government does not grasp it in time and taking samples for testing is also inadequate. When the district veterinary staff has not arrived in time, the people and commune officials have to reluctantly take samples to promptly destroy the pigs.

However, according to our observations on inter-commune and inter-village roads, including the three villages that have had the epidemic for less than 21 days: Ban Phuc, Ban Xieng and Ban Hop Thanh, we have not seen any local checkpoints to prevent people from transporting pigs and pork products in and out. This shows that the prevention and control of African swine fever in Don Phuc is not drastic. This means that African swine fever is threatening thousands of pigs of hundreds of households here.

The total number of pigs culled due to the disease is 255, with a total weight of 14,471 kg. Of which, Don Phuc commune has the most outbreaks and the most complicated developments.

Anh Son district is also one of the localities where African swine fever has been complicated and prolonged for many months. In some communes of Anh Son district: Khai Son, Long Son... lime powder was sprinkled white at the beginning of alleys and main roads leading to villages and hamlets.

According to local residents, usually residential areas with African swine fever are sprinkled with lime powder to prevent the disease; even in some residential areas that have not had the disease, people still sprinkle lime to prevent the disease from spreading through vehicles.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Son - Director of the Agricultural Service Center of Anh Son district said: From the beginning of 2025 until now, the whole district has destroyed 550 pigs infected with African swine fever, with a total weight of more than 32 tons. As of May 15, there are still 6 communes that have not passed 21 days of the epidemic: Phuc Son, Long Son, Cao Son, Lang Son , Duc Son, Khai Son.

The district directed localities to set up checkpoints to isolate the epidemic in a small area; at the same time, use chemicals to spray disinfectants in barn areas and use lime powder to sprinkle at the entrances and exits of residential areas to prevent the spread of the epidemic.

Mr. Nguyen Trong Son - Director of Anh Son District Agricultural Service Center

According to the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Medicine, from the beginning of 2025 to May 10, there were 70 outbreaks of African swine fever in 13 districts, cities and towns in the province; the total number of pigs that had to be destroyed was 1,700, weighing more than 99,000 kg. The districts with the most outbreaks were: Yen Thanh, Do Luong, Nghi Loc, Quynh Luu, Anh Son, Thanh Chuong.

Currently, as of May 10, there are still 53 African swine fever outbreaks in the province that have not passed 21 days in 11 districts and cities. In particular, the two outbreaks in Nam Giai commune (Que Phong) and Don Phuc commune (Con Cuong) have been quite complicated and have lasted for many months.

Do not be subjective or negligent in disease prevention and control work.

According to the assessment of the professional agency, currently people mainly raise livestock on a small scale, and the transportation and slaughter of animals are not strictly controlled. People still hide the epidemic, sell animals when suspected of being sick; the destruction of sick animals is still wrong or not completely destroyed. Meanwhile, the complicated weather reduces the resistance of livestock, so the risk of African swine fever and other dangerous diseases in livestock arising and spreading in the coming time is very high.

Faced with the recurrence of African swine fever in many localities, Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Nguyen Van De recently requested localities to strengthen monitoring, early detection, reporting and timely handling of epidemics in livestock; absolutely not be subjective or negligent in disease prevention and control.

Guide and direct the work of handling outbreaks such as destruction, disinfection, investigation, and zoning of outbreaks according to technical procedures to limit the occurrence and spread of disease; do not let the arrangement of local organizations and apparatus affect the work of disease prevention, control, and control.

For localities where African swine fever is occurring such as Con Cuong, Yen Thanh, Do Luong, Nghi Loc, Quynh Luu, Anh Son, Thanh Chuong and especially the two outbreaks in Nam Giai commune (Que Phong) and Don Phuc commune (Con Cuong), mobilize resources to completely handle the outbreaks, prevent the spread of the disease, prolong it and limit damage and the emergence of new outbreaks.
