To control 5 kites at the same time, making them glide, spin, and follow each other in figure 8 circles in the sky is a process that artist Pham Van Tam has spent 20 years practicing.
Mr. Pham Van Tam (53 years old, Binh Tan district) is known by many people in the kite flying community in the country and abroad as one of two artists who can perform flying 5 kites at the same time. To maintain his feeling and improve his technique, every afternoon Mr. Tam regularly goes to kite fields in District 12 and Hoc Mon (HCMC) to practice. Before taking off his kite, Mr. Tam has to string around the flying area so that outsiders do not fly kites near the area where he practices. "Strong winds cause kites to fly at high speeds, which can easily cut the kite strings of people flying around. That's why every day I go to the kite fields as early as possible to string around the flying area to ensure everyone's safety," Mr. Tam said. The type of kite that Mr. Tam uses is a sport kite (Stunt Kite) controlled by 2 strings, can glide left and right or spin in circles according to the controller's wishes. When flying, the kite can make sounds depending on the speed and ability of the controller.
To be able to control 5 kites at the same time, Mr. Tam has to use his entire body such as 2 arms, 2 shoulders, waist and 2 legs. For Mr. Tam, the fifth kite is the most difficult to control because the control position is on the legs. "It took me 6 years to be able to control 4 kites on my shoulders, waist, and arms. But for the fifth kite on my legs, I had to practice non-stop for 3 consecutive years to be able to perform flying in formation," said Mr. Tam.
Sharing about pursuing his passion for kite flying, Mr. Tam said: "Since I was a child, I have had a passion for kites. In 2003, I accidentally saw a foreign artist playing a sport kite and from then on, I started to spend time practicing, from one kite until now I can control 5 kites at the same time." After 20 years of diligent practice, Mr. Tam can now freely perform in the air with 5 kites at the same time according to his wishes. Mr. Tam performed in the air with movements such as making kites spin, split, follow each other in figure 8 circles... During practice, he often spends a little time to convey his passion to the children with the desire to develop this sport further in the future. "I want to teach children to fly kites to be active, reduce stress and hope that if parents have time, they will bring their children to me so that I can guide them to play this healthy sport instead of letting them stay at home playing games and not being able to exercise," Mr. Tam shared. For Mr. Tam, kite flying is an indispensable passion. His main job is selling interior decoration items. In addition, he also undertakes handicrafts or repairs of all kinds of kites to earn extra income. On average, a finished kite made by Mr. Tam himself takes up to 36 hours to complete. "At first, when I knew that Mr. Tam intended to pursue kite flying, I was very opposed. However, when I saw him sneaking out to practice kite flying every day, I was quite moved. Therefore, I supported my husband to pursue this sport to both improve his health and be able to continue to introduce this sport to the next generation," said Mrs. Pham Thi Thanh Thao (43 years old), Mr. Tam's wife. Over the years of competition, Mr. Tam has won many national and international awards. Most of his awards will be displayed at the club, he only keeps a few hanging in his house as souvenirs. According to the plan in the near future, Mr. Tam will organize a Guinness record-setting ceremony for the person performing the most kites in the air in the world . "Currently, the Guinness record has confirmed that it will be certified, but at present I do not have enough funds to do it. Hopefully, there will be units and individuals who are passionate about kites to support to bring this sport further," Mr. Tam excitedly said.
