Cage fish farming in Phu Yen

Việt NamViệt Nam28/10/2024

With over 3,000 hectares of Da River reservoir surface and two irrigation works of Suoi Hom and Suoi Chieu lakes , for many years now, people in the communes of the reservoir have taken advantage of surface water resources, developed cage fish farming, gradually bringing economic efficiency, contributing to hunger eradication, poverty reduction, and improving living standards.

Taking advantage of the water surface of the Da River reservoir, Mr. Giap's family has invested in developing 8 solid fish cages. Taking advantage of agricultural by-products and natural food sources, Mr. Giap mainly raises grass carp, perch, common carp and catfish. According to Mr. Giap, the fish here grow quickly, have firm meat, and are sought out by traders who come to buy them at home. From raising fish in cages, he has an additional income of 50-70 million VND each year.

Mr. LUONG VAN GIAP - Ha Luong Village, Tuong Phong Commune, Phu Yen, Son La : Raising fish in cages here is very good. If there is investment capital, it will bring a lot of economic benefits to the household. Every year, my family sells 2-2.5 tons of fish to the market.

Tuong Phong is the commune with the most stable development of cage fish farming in Phu Yen district. Thanks to natural flow and stable water level, abundant food sources, cage fish farming has many advantages. The scale of fish cages here has increased rapidly since the commune implemented Resolution 88/2014 of the Provincial People's Council on special policies to encourage enterprises and cooperatives to invest in agricultural and rural development in Son La province in the period of 2015-2020 with nearly 200 fish cages of all kinds.

Mr. CAM VAN THONG - Vice Chairman of Tuong Phong Commune People's Committee, Phu Yen, Son La: The Commune Party Committee has also issued a specialized Resolution on aquaculture and fishing in the lake area. The advantage of Tuong Phong Commune is the lake surface, with an area of 330.3 hectares, which is the greatest advantage for people to raise fish in cages. Since the implementation of Resolution 88, some people have also had their main source of income mainly from investing in fish in cages.

Suoi Chieu irrigation lake started to accumulate water in 2012, which was also the time when local people invested in developing cage fish farming associated with tourism development. In Suoi Chieu lake area, there are currently 31 households raising cage fish, with 68 cages on an area of nearly 2,200 m2 with fish species such as grass carp, common carp, tilapia, the average fish output reached nearly 20 tons/cage/year.

Mr. MUI VAN LAM - Secretary of the Party Committee, Head of Chieu village, Muong Thai commune, Phu Yen, Son La: With the State's attention and support to encourage aquaculture, the village has also promoted and mobilized people to combine cages and rafts, tie cages and rafts close together for convenient protection and care, and secondly, exchange experiences in fish farming with each other to develop better fish farming.

Phu Yen district currently has 434 fish cages, of which 377 are in the Song Da reservoir area. Most of the people raise fish on a small scale, at household scale, so it has not really brought high economic value. The development of fish cage scale still faces many difficulties because people lack investment capital, lack of knowledge about aquaculture techniques; many people have difficulty in consuming products. On the other hand, the water level in the Song Da reservoir area is unstable in many places, people have difficulty in developing fish cages.

Ms. BAC CAM XIENG - Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Phu Yen district, Son La: Our Department of Agriculture also hopes that all levels and sectors, especially the Department of Agriculture and the provincial sectors, will recommend to the central ministries and sectors how to regulate the water source to be truly stable so that people can raise aquatic products to have a sustainable livelihood.

To develop cage fish farming, Phu Yen district guides households to link up, consolidate fisheries cooperatives, organize concentrated farming, promote the application of high technology to improve productivity and quality, find stable output, and strive to increase the number to 500 fish cages by 2025./.
