Understanding the benefits of building rural roads, Mr. Dang Xuan Doi, a veteran in Phu Thinh 1 hamlet, An Thai commune (Phu Giao district), performed a noble act: Donating over 1,600 square meters of land to the local authorities for rural road construction.

Veteran Dang Xuan Doi (center) shares about his family's decision to donate land for road construction.

Leading us on a tour of the road under construction, war veteran Dang Xuan Doi recounted his family's land donation for the road project. Not long ago, when the local authorities planned to build the Be Nuoc road, which would pass through his family's farmland, Mr. Doi discussed with his family the idea of donating land and contributing to the road's construction. Mr. Doi shared: “My children and grandchildren all agreed to donate a portion of the land. Although it caused some losses for the family, it brought great benefits to the people and contributed to the local development. The whole family agreed, except for my wife, who was still hesitant at the time because the donated land was substantial, equivalent to a large sum of money…”

Therefore, Mr. Doi was determined to persuade his wife through a gradual and persistent approach. Eventually, she understood the social values and benefits of donating land for road construction, which would contribute to the overall change and development of their hometown. Finally, his wife agreed, and the family voluntarily donated over 1,600 square meters of land along with several cashew trees over 20 years old, worth more than 3 billion VND, to help the local community build rural roads.

The pioneering and exemplary actions of the family of war veteran Dang Xuan Doi have created a new momentum in the emulation movement to jointly contribute to building new rural areas in the locality. The households along the road also unanimously agreed to voluntarily donate land for the road construction. Mr. Bui Van Hai, Mr. Doi's neighbor, said: “Understanding the benefits of building rural roads, and seeing Mr. Doi's noble gesture of voluntarily donating a large area of land, my family also followed suit, voluntarily donating land to contribute to making this road open, spacious, and convenient for people to travel safely. As soon as we donated the land, the commune started building the road immediately. Now that the road is taking shape, we are very happy and excited…,” Mr. Bui Van Hai said.

Mr. Dang Duc Nam, Chairman of the Veterans Association of An Thai commune, said that in recent years, implementing the movement "All people join hands to build new rural areas and civilized urban areas," the commune's Veterans Association has concretized and incorporated the "Exemplary Veterans" movement, linked with promoting the study and emulation of Ho Chi Minh's ideology, ethics, and style. From this movement, many members and veterans have set exemplary examples and voluntarily donated land for road construction. A prime example is the family of veteran Dang Xuan Doi, who donated land and crops worth over 3 billion VND without demanding any compensation.

“This further highlights the noble qualities and image of ‘Uncle Ho’s soldiers,’ who, whether facing life and death in war, bombs and bullets, or in building the homeland, always sacrificed personal interests for the common good of the people and the nation… Mr. Doi is a shining example for each of us cadres, members, and veterans in particular, and the people in general, to follow…,” said Mr. Dang Duc Nam.
