Nghia Lo changes crop structure: Success from "Party's will - people's heart"

Not stopping at directive documents or meetings, the implementation of Party resolutions in Nghia Lo town (Yen Bai province) has been and is being concretized by practical actions. In particular, changing the crop structure is becoming an effective direction, contributing to increasing the economic value of each unit of cultivated land area.

>> Nghia Lo: Changing crop structure, improving economic efficiency

In line with the leadership plan to implement the political tasks of Nghia Lo Town Party Committee in 2025, especially the task of restructuring agriculture associated with building new rural areas, the Party Committee and the government of Nghia Lo Town have persistently directed the conversion of ineffective rice fields and coastal land into crops with higher economic value. The goal is to plan concentrated production areas, attract investment, apply mechanization and scientific and technological advances to improve the quality of agricultural products.

Up to now, the entire Nghia Lo town has had nearly 45 hectares of land converted to crop structure. Of which, over 32 hectares have been converted to grow annual crops such as corn, vegetables, bitter melon, various melons, chili... and more than 8 hectares of perennial crops, mainly citrus fruit trees. Many models initially brought in incomes of 250 - 350 million VND/ha/year such as the model of growing pumpkin for seeds, Japanese green chili, melon, watermelon...

The change not only comes from the correct policies of the Party Committee and the government but also the result of consensus and active response from the people. Previously ineffective rice fields have now been "changed into new clothes" with fruit orchards and vegetable fields with many times higher economic value.

Thach Luong Commune, Nghia Lo Town is one of the leading localities in converting crop structure in Nghia Lo. According to Ms. Do Thi Thanh Nga - Deputy Secretary, Chairman of Nghia Lo Town People's Committee, "The town government has reviewed and evaluated the entire cultivated area, especially areas that do not have proactive water sources, to convert to drought-resistant crops that adapt well to climate conditions such as short-term vegetables, fruit trees, and seed trees. The total annual conversion area is about 20 hectares".

Mr. Luong Van Hung - Chairman of Thach Luong Commune People's Committee said, "The conversion has helped improve economic efficiency, gradually forming a commodity production area and attracting businesses inside and outside the province to link up to consume products."

In Co Ha village, Ms. Ha Thi Toan is one of the typical farmers who boldly switched to growing pumpkin seeds on an area of 1,500 m². Thanks to the cooperation with Tan Loc Phat Company in product consumption and technical support, her family has an income of nearly 100 million VND/year. According to Ms. Toan, this model not only helps increase income but also creates peace of mind for people in production.

Similarly, Ms. Ha Thi Duc in Nam To village also affirmed, "The government's drastic intervention, along with practical support mechanisms, has created conditions for people to change their production mindset, gradually apply science and technology and move towards small-scale agricultural production, linked to the market."

Not only Thach Luong, Thanh Luong commune is also a successful locality in agricultural restructuring. From 2016 to now, the commune has converted nearly 30 hectares of ineffective rice fields to grow crops with high economic value. Thanks to the initiative of the Party Committee and the government in leading, directing and raising awareness for the people, the commune has built many effective production models, including the chili growing cooperative.

Ms. Nong Thi Nga - Deputy Head of the Chili Export Cooperative, Thanh Luong Commune, Nghia Lo Town shared, "Growing chili is much more economically efficient than rice. Our cooperative is trained in techniques, supported with fertilizers, seeds and output, so we are very confident in production."

The story of crop structure conversion in Nghia Lo is affirming that when the "Party's will" blends with the "people's heart", positive changes are not only reflected in growth figures or converted areas, but also in changes in production thinking, in revived fields and the people's increasingly strong belief in the Party's leadership role.

That journey is still ongoing – the journey to build sustainable, modern agriculture, bringing the Party's resolutions to truly penetrate the lives of people in the highlands of Nghia Lo.
