In the course of history, the United States is known as a superpower that is of interest to researchers and policy makers. The inclusion of US studies in the curriculum has been implemented in many institutions with in-depth programs on American studies such as the Faculty of International Studies, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi, or teaching about US foreign policy at institutions with a major in International Politics , Diplomatic Academy; Faculty of International Relations, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Vietnam National University, Hanoi...
The American Studies Textbook , co-edited by Associate Professor Dr. Le Dinh Tinh and Professor Dr. Nguyen Thai Yen Huong, is a scientific work that develops teaching content from interdisciplinary science, analyzes and explains content related to lectures in the training program implemented at the Diplomatic Academy, with an emphasis on lectures related to the policies and foreign relations of the United States with partners and subjects in the international political system.
The textbook consists of five chapters presented on each issue related to US studies with the participation of a group of authors who are lecturers and researchers teaching in the International Relations and US Studies program at the Diplomatic Academy.
The chapters all have a common structure including: (i) Theoretical and practical basis; (ii) implementation process or practice of a content; (iii) Discussion questions to facilitate learners to achieve analytical, evaluation and forecasting skills, leading to the ability to work independently.
Chapter 1 on “History and Culture of the United States” covers the history of the formation and development of the United States up to the present period; analyzes the factors that create the cultural and social characteristics of the United States and the impact of those characteristics on foreign policy.
Chapter 2 on “The US Political System” analyzes, synthesizes and mentions the foundation of the US political system, which is the birth of the Constitution, the relationship between branches in the political system based on the principle of separation of powers, between the federal government and the state governments; the political party system and the lobbying process of US interest groups, the relationship between the political system and the process of planning and implementing US foreign policy.
Chapter 3 outlines the economic history of the United States from its founding to the present, analyzing and evaluating the foreign economic relations of the United States through important historical periods.
Chapter 4 proceeds in a manner that provides an analytical framework for the formation and development of US foreign and defense policy.
Chapter 5 analyzes, synthesizes and evaluates based on the practical implementation of US policies towards Asia-Pacific, Europe and some partners such as China, Vietnam and the regional institution ASEAN.
The American Studies textbook is not a book that introduces the United States in a general way, but aims to gradually build reading skills, collect and process information, and move towards the skills of researching, analyzing, synthesizing and building approaches and solving problems that need to be researched about the history, culture and policies of the United States towards its partners.
In addition, another important part is that students have more awareness to form their own arguments related to planning and implementing Vietnam's policies on the basis of an independent, autonomous, multilateral, diversified foreign policy for peace, cooperation and development, "responding to all changes with the constant", valuing relations with neighboring countries, major countries and partners.
This is also a source of information to help readers have more research and reference materials about the United States, the world's leading power, an important partner of Vietnam.
