Conducted numerous scientific studies related to lung disease and tuberculosis
Speaking at the Conference, Director of the Central Lung Hospital, in charge of the National Tuberculosis Control Program, Dr. Dinh Van Luong said: For Medicine in general and the lung and tuberculosis specialties in particular, supporting and promoting research has been one of the strategic priorities of the World Health Organization globally. In the National Strategy for protecting, caring for and improving people's health until 2030, with a vision to 2045 approved by the Prime Minister in Decision No. 89/QD-TTg dated January 23, 2024, scientific research is also one of the important solutions contributing to the success of health care in Vietnam.
The Central Lung Hospital is a leading specialized hospital assigned by the Ministry of Health to be the focal point for developing scientific research cooperation in the fields of lung diseases and tuberculosis, deploying the application of scientific advances to serve the work of prevention, examination, treatment, training and technology transfer.
Over the years, the Central Lung Hospital and the National Tuberculosis Control Program (CTCLQG) have been conducting many scientific and technological studies related to lung diseases and tuberculosis, such as lung cancer, organ transplantation, in-depth studies on respiratory diseases, and tuberculosis. The research is increasingly of high quality, and the opportunities for international cooperation are increasing.
According to Dr. Dinh Van Luong, the work of improving lung health care, the burden of lung disease and tuberculosis tends to increase significantly, especially after the Covid-19 pandemic, making the need to develop advanced and effective techniques more urgent than ever.
Responding to the needs of the people, the Central Lung Hospital has routinely performed most of the advanced techniques in both respiratory medicine and thoracic surgery. The hospital has successfully completed the lung transplant project, a step towards the pinnacle of expertise, opening up opportunities for longer life and improving the quality of life for late-stage patients who no longer respond to other treatment methods. These are the lung transplants that are considered the most comprehensive successes in Vietnam to date, demonstrating that the application of advanced techniques in health care will bring great achievements and benefits to the Vietnamese people.
Regarding tuberculosis prevention, the Hospital has effectively implemented this task over the past many years, which has been recognized and highly appreciated by the leaders of the Party, State, Government, Ministry of Health and the international community.
Deploying AI to detect cases in many provinces and cities
According to Associate Professor, Dr. Nguyen Binh Hoa, Deputy Director of the Central Lung Hospital, Vietnam is currently applying artificial intelligence (AI) in detecting tuberculosis. Artificial intelligence applications are attached to X-ray machines, which will have software to support reading X-ray films. AI will help doctors find patients suspected of having tuberculosis based on the lesions, from which doctors will prescribe more accurate tuberculosis bacteria tests.
The National Tuberculosis Control Program has deployed AI to detect cases in many provinces and cities since 2021. The rate of TB detection between medical facilities that deployed AI and those that did not deploy AI doubled. Even comparing the time before and after deploying AI at a medical facility, the number of TB cases detected also increased significantly.
In district-level medical facilities and remote areas where there is a shortage of tuberculosis specialists, the application of artificial intelligence will be effective in early detection of tuberculosis in the community.
Within the framework of the conference, 4 main topics, including Lung Transplantation, Respiratory, Lung Cancer, Tuberculosis and Pulmonary Fungus, attracted many presentations from international and domestic reporters. Delegates shared and updated advanced techniques, new achievements in lung transplantation, regenerative medicine, lung cancer and tuberculosis prevention and control.../.
