Over the past few days, dozens of households in Co Noi commune, Mai Son district have reported to local authorities that the sweet corn they planted has produced cobs but no kernels, causing confusion and anxiety among the people. A reporter from Son La Radio and Television Station was present in the area to report on this situation.
3 months of tending the plants is not equal to 1 day of tending the fruits! Mrs. Theu's family's 2 hectares of sweet corn, which yielded hundreds of millions of dong in previous crops, suddenly faced a risk of failure this crop. The seeds were the same as in previous crops, the care techniques were the same, the corn plants grew normally, but when they flowered, a plant had many weak cobs, then cobs but no kernels.
Ms. LE THI THEU - TK Quyet Thang, Co Noi commune, Mai Son, Son La: " My family also fertilized as instructed on the packaging, the planting technique was the same, when it came to flowering and fruiting, the corn came out but there was no silk, no seeds, the loss was about 80%. I should have earned 400 million from 2 hectares of corn, but now the income is not worth anything, not enough for fertilizer, seeds, care and payment to the state. I request the superiors to solve this for us, otherwise it will be a big loss ."
Not only Mrs. Theu's corn garden suffered from this phenomenon, but many other households' corn fields also suffered from the same problem. Corn grew into ears, even a lot of ears, but no kernels formed. Small gardens were affected by 40-50%, large gardens were affected by up to 80%. However, the gardens affected by this phenomenon all had one thing in common: "the same type of seed".
Ms. NGHIEM LE QUAN - Kim Son Village, Co Noi Commune, Mai Son, Son La: " This is the Viet Thai variety, folks. We have trusted the Viet Thai variety for so many years. And here is a corn cob on a corn plant that splits like this, 1,2,3,4 cobs. Observing the corn field, there are about 30% of this type. The type with 1 cob without silk and no kernel also accounts for 40%."
Sweet corn has been cultivated by the people of Co Noi commune for many years now and has a very high yield of 20-30 tons/ha, with an average selling price of about 10 thousand VND/kg, each hectare also brings in an income of about 200 - 300 million VND. Therefore, the situation of corn with ears but no seeds not only causes loss of revenue but also makes farmers here confused and worried.
Mr. CAM VAN KHOA - Vice Chairman of Co Noi Commune People's Committee, Mai Son, Son La: "In Co Noi Commune, there are currently 5 villages and sub-regions that have planted corn, reaching the flagging and cob-growing stage. However, according to the people's feedback, the corn is now growing cobs but has no silk and no kernels. The Commune People's Committee has accepted this and assigned civil servants to go and collect statistics and report to the Department of Agriculture of Mai Son District."
15 hectares of sweet corn of nearly 30 households in Co Noi commune are at risk of crop failure and people are still waiting for answers from seed suppliers, ... Along with that are support solutions from local authorities and functional agencies./.
