On December 4, Hoan Kiem District Police ( Hanoi ) are investigating the cause of the incident in which a female driver drove a Mercedes and crashed into part of a house in the Old Quarter.
A representative of the Hanoi Old Quarter Management Board said that the house at 47 Hang Bac, whose wall collapsed, is one of 538 houses under preservation, over 100 years old.
"This is one of the oldest remaining houses in Hanoi," he added.
The house was built in the late 19th century, with an original area of over 200 square meters. The architecture bears the mark of the feudal era, with a central walkway and a high facade. The front of the house attracts attention because it juts out, dividing the sidewalk on the odd-numbered Hang Bac Street in half.
Scene of the incident.
Regarding the current state of the old house, the leader of Hang Bac Ward People's Committee said that the collapsed area is about 1 meter wide from the sidewalk in, not affecting the main structure such as the system of columns, pillars and porch roof.
Previously, through many inspections, the authorities determined that the wall had shown signs of deterioration over time. In early 2010, a fire burned down the entire middle of the house. The burned part had the most beautiful architecture, mainly made of wood.
"Since then, the homeowner is no longer here," said the leader of Hang Bac Ward People's Committee.
According to Hoan Kiem District Police, at around 3:00 a.m. on December 4, Ms. BTL (20 years old, living in Cau Giay District) drove a Mercedes car on Hang Bac Street, from Ma May to Ta Hien.
When arriving in front of the house at 47 Hang Bac, the car crashed into the left side of the house causing part of the outer wall to collapse.
At the time of the incident, there were two women in the car, Ms. L. was the driver. The female driver is working with the Hoan Kiem District Police.
Currently, the authorities have installed equipment to support the main structures of the house before agreeing on a repair plan.
