The report “Bridging the AI Gap: Awareness and Trends in AI Application among Online Sellers in Southeast Asia” released by Lazada platform on April 9 showed that Vietnam and Indonesia lead in the level of AI application in e-commerce in Southeast Asia.

Vietnam is less afraid of costs and time

Specifically, Vietnam and Indonesia both have AI application rates of 42% in business activities, followed closely by Singapore and Thailand with a rate of 39%.

According to the report, nearly 7 in 10 (68%) online sellers in Southeast Asia said they have some understanding of AI. In Vietnam, this figure is nearly 8 in 10 sellers (77%), higher than the regional average.

However, online sellers also struggle to assess the effectiveness of AI and its cost impact. While 89% of sellers acknowledge the role of AI in improving work efficiency, nearly two-thirds (61%) remain skeptical about its overall usefulness.

Furthermore, nearly all sellers (93%) agree that using AI will save costs in the long term, but 64% still worry that the cost and time required to implement are barriers to AI integration.

In Vietnam, sellers generally have a positive view of the benefits of AI (94%), especially in boosting productivity, and they are also less concerned about cost and time issues (35%).

How much of an AI application team are you?

The report classifies sellers into three groups based on the level of AI application according to five criteria: operations and logistics, product management, marketing and advertising, customer service, and human resource management.

First are AI-savvy salespeople. These are those who have integrated AI into at least 80% of their business operations.

In Vietnam, only about one-fifth (22%) of sellers fall into this group (compared to 24% in the region).

Second are sellers who are interested in AI. They are those who have integrated some AI into their business, but are still struggling with important steps. Most sellers in Vietnam belong to this segment (64%, compared to 50% in Southeast Asia).

The final group is sellers who are cautious about AI. This group accounts for 14% in Vietnam (compared to 26% in Southeast Asia).
