Nghi Xuan elderly people are passionate about promoting their hometown's cultural heritage

Nghi Xuan district ( Ha Tinh ) currently has 22 clubs of various types of folk songs, ca tru, hat van and vi and giam, established and operating effectively, of which many clubs for the elderly account for 60-70%.

On the occasion of the 203rd death anniversary of the Great Poet Nguyen Du on September 24, 2023 (ie the 10th day of the 8th lunar month), in addition to the traditional incense offering ceremony, the Management Board of Nguyen Du Relic Site also organized a performance of Kieu play, performed by the Kieu Play Club of Tien Dien town (Nghi Xuan).

With two excerpts "The Thuy Kieu sisters go out in spring" and "The moment Tu Hai's heart was stirred up", the program left many impressions on the delegates and many students from several schools in Nghi Xuan and Vinh City ( Nghe An ).

Hoang Xuan An (8th grade student at a secondary school in Vinh City) expressed: "I feel very special when I come back to offer incense on the occasion of the death anniversary of the great poet Nguyen Du and watch the performance of Kieu. Through the performance, the artists recreated the characters Thuy Kieu, Thuy Van, Vuong Quan, Tu Hai..., in an interesting way as if they stepped out of the book onto the stage."

These performances are one of many programs that the Tien Dien Town Kieu Chess Club has staged and performed at many events in recent times. Few people know that behind the club's operations are the couple Mr. Nguyen Mau (76 years old) and Mrs. Tran Thi Phuong (71 years old), who are both the Chairman and Vice Chairman of the Club.

Meritorious artist Tran Thi Phuong said: "After a long period of being forgotten and neglected, in 2000, my husband (who was then a teacher at Tien Yen Secondary School - Nghi Xuan) and I discussed restoring and establishing the Kieu Play Club. Initially, there were only a few members, but now the club has 15 members, including 5 senior members. In order to preserve and promote the cultural heritage of our ancestors in life, we have constantly mobilized the young generation and passed on to them the love, passion and skills of performing Kieu plays."

In Tien Dien town, there is also the Kieu Xuan Lien Play Club, led by Meritorious Artist Nguyen Huynh, who is 77 years old this year. He has spent over 50 years diligently preserving and passing on the Kieu Play to many generations.

At the recently held Provincial Elderly Singing Festival, the Nghi Xuan troupe won second prize overall, with the ca tru performance “Celebrating Spring in the Country” performed by artists Phan Thi Loan, Nguyen Thi Huong and singer Nguyen Thi Khuyen winning first prize. All are members of the Co Dam Ca Tru Club.

Mr. Tran Van Dai - Chairman of the Co Dam Ca Tru Club said: "The club currently has 30 members, of which 6 are elderly members. The grandparents and mothers are always enthusiastic in participating in activities, some of whom have been involved in preserving and promoting Ca Tru for the past 20-30 years. The dedication of the elderly members has passed on to us and the younger generation the passion as well as the awareness of preserving the intangible cultural heritage of our homeland."

Currently, in addition to 2 Ca Tru and 2 Kieu clubs, Nghi Xuan has also established 1 Hat Van club, 17 Vi and Giam folk song clubs in 17 communes and towns, gathering hundreds of members, of which elderly members account for an average of 30%. Some Vi and Giam folk song clubs of Dan Truong, Xuan Hai... have a proportion of elderly people of 60-70%. In addition to participating in performances, the artists and members who are elderly have a role in leading and teaching younger members.

Along with preservation through performance practice, the elderly artisans in Nghi Xuan also research, collect, and compose new lyrics for folk songs such as Vi, Giam, Ca Tru... to promote and spread the cultural heritage of their homeland. Recently, at the award ceremony for composing and promoting literary, artistic, and journalistic works on the theme "Studying and following Ho Chi Minh's ideology, morality, and style" for the period 2021 - 2023, organized by the Central Propaganda Department, People's Artisan Nguyen Ban (84 years old, Tien Dien town, Nghi Xuan) was honored to receive the outstanding individual award.

He is not only a folk art researcher but also the composer of hundreds of folk song suites, collecting and writing new lyrics for many types of ca tru..., creating conditions for the cultural heritage of his homeland to increasingly promote its value in modern life.

Up to now, Nghi Xuan district has 7 artisans who have been awarded the titles of People's Artisan and Meritorious Artisan by the President, of which 5 are members of the Elderly Association. In recent times, artisans in particular and elderly members in general at the clubs have promoted the role of "old age setting a good example", constantly striving and tirelessly preserving and promoting intangible cultural heritage. Thereby, together with local authorities and departments, branches and unions, building a cultural life that is increasingly improving, including the goal of building Nghi Xuan district into a model new rural district in terms of culture.

Over the years, Nghi Xuan has always made efforts to preserve and promote the values ​​of cultural heritage in general, intangible cultural heritage in particular, and has achieved many outstanding results. To achieve this, in addition to resources from many policies of the province and district, there are important contributions from artisans, members of clubs in general and the elderly in particular.

With their enthusiasm and exemplary behavior, the artisans and members of the Folk Arts Club who are elderly have spread their love and awareness of preserving and promoting the value of their homeland's heritage to the masses, especially the young generation to learn and follow.
