"Learn to work, to be a human, to be a cadre"
In a small peaceful corner in the heart of bustling Ho Chi Minh City, there is a cadre with a passionate heart and a simple style - Major So Thanh Tuan (born in 1983) working at the Organization Department, Political Department - Ho Chi Minh City Command. He is a son of the Cham H'roi ethnic group, born into a farming family with a revolutionary tradition - his father is a former volunteer soldier who fought on the K battlefield, a 4/4 class disabled veteran.
Growing up in the poor countryside of Son Phuoc commune, Son Hoa district, Phu Yen province, So Thanh Tuan's childhood was filled with hardship. Every day he ate rice mixed with corn and potatoes, went to school in the morning, and went to the fields in the afternoon to help his family.
However, the young man always had a strong will to rise up. In 1996, he was selected to join the Ethnic Military Cadet School, starting his journey of training in the military environment. The years of studying and working at the Military School of Military Region 5, the Army Officer School 2 and units such as the Ninh Son District Military Command, the District 2 Military Command - Ho Chi Minh City, the City Command... have forged a brave, humble soldier, devoted to his duty.
Recalling his first days working at the Ho Chi Minh City Command - a place with a long tradition, a new and challenging environment, Major Tuan could not hide his emotions: "I was excited and filled with joy. But I was also very confused and worried because the new job had high requirements, a large volume, a complex nature, and required absolute precision."
So Thanh Tuan realized that although it was a difficult task, it was also an opportunity for him to challenge himself, strive, and grow. With the attention, encouragement, and help of commanders at all levels and comrades and teammates, he was determined and made efforts to practice, study, and strive to complete the task well; not disappointing the trust and expectations of his superiors and family.
“As a cadre of the Party and the Army, I always remember, study and follow Uncle Ho's example of self-study spirit - a symbol of will and desire for lifelong learning, perseverance, passion and rare self-study attitude: "Study to work, to be a human, to be a cadre...", Mr. Tuan shared.
The spirit of “learning to work, to be a human being, to be a cadre” that President Ho Chi Minh once emphasized has become the guiding principle for So Thanh Tuan’s journey of striving. Mr. Tuan clearly determined that to do a good job, he must first practice the right learning attitude – learning from books, from comrades, teammates, learning from every meeting, every directive, every document that is deployed. Every handover session, every agency meeting is a time for him to meticulously take notes, quietly observe and silently learn.

Perhaps the most valuable thing about him is his initiative, his inquisitiveness, and his eagerness to learn. Before each proposal or consultation, he takes time to research thoroughly, anticipates possible situations, and always listens to opinions from superiors and teammates. For him, accuracy is not a choice, but a mandatory requirement. He shared: “I learned from Uncle Ho in being meticulous, thorough, and always focusing on work efficiency; I do not allow myself to be careless in any content.”
As an officer of the Political Department, which requires comprehensive ability, flexibility and high standards in consulting and document processing, he applies a comprehensive and systematic thinking in analyzing work, while focusing on Party development work, building strong Party cells in line with local and unit realities. Many of his consulting proposals in building Party cell living habits, improving management quality, training Party members, developing new Party members, etc. are recognized and highly appreciated by superiors.
During his work, when there were important, new, difficult or urgent tasks, he proactively accepted them, researched them, and implemented them effectively. In particular, during the peak period of COVID-19 prevention and control, So Thanh Tuan demonstrated a sense of responsibility, dedication, and effort. Not only did he closely follow instructions and guidance from his superiors, he also proactively proposed many leadership and direction solutions, contributing to the city's armed forces in effectively implementing epidemic prevention and control work, especially in key areas.
Family man
Besides his dedication to work, So Thanh Tuan is also a family man. Talking about the home front, he emotionally shared: “I have little time at home because of the nature of my job. My parents are old and often sick, my two children are still young, my wife takes care of almost all the housework.” He considers his wife as his companion, a strong spiritual support, always silently sharing and supporting him in his career path. “With love, pride, and respect for her husband’s work, she has overcome all the disadvantages to be a strong home front for me,” he said.
In So Thanh Tuan, people see a typical model of a new era cadre: simple but standard, modest but constantly improving, steadfast in thought and flexible in action. All his achievements come not only from his perseverance in studying and training, but also from an unyielding spirit in the face of difficulties, always aiming towards the ideals of the Party and the people.
It is no exaggeration to say that the life and path of Major So Thanh Tuan are living proof of the spirit of studying and following Uncle Ho. The journey from a poor ethnic minority boy, with a meal of rice mixed with potatoes, to a cadre of the Political Department at the City Command level - is a journey of perseverance, silent sacrifice, of a heart always burning with faith in the Party and in revolutionary ideals.
When asked about the road ahead, he just smiled gently: "I only have one wish - to do my job well, to be worthy of the trust of the organization, my family and my teammates". A simple saying but full of passion from a soldier who always remembers Uncle Ho's teachings: "Whatever is beneficial to the people, try to do it. Whatever is harmful to the people, try to avoid it".
