After dismantling the "Shark Jaw" building, Dong Kinh - Nghia Thuc Square was renovated and expanded with a space of nearly 1.4 hectares. In phase 1, the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem Ward completed items such as infrastructure improvement, adding trees, paving the road surface...
Dinh Tien Hoang Street has had its traffic reorganized, with pedestrian spaces arranged with many resting benches; parking lots have been relocated, median strips have been removed, the tree system remains intact, mobile flower pots have been added and traffic organization has been rearranged.
A map of Dong Kinh - Nghia Thuc Square area is placed at the foot of the LED screen, attracting many people to come and see.
Many people appreciate the change, saying that the square space is more spacious, airy and convenient for community activities. However, there are also opinions that the new design is not beautiful, not in harmony with the historical and cultural landscape around Hoan Kiem Lake.
Ms. Dao Thi Hang (in Hang Buom ward, Hanoi ) commented: "I see that the square has changed a lot, it is more spacious and airy. The surrounding area is decorated with ornamental plants, making the space here more beautiful and fresh. Traffic has also been rerouted, although the path for motorbikes and cars is smaller, but in return the area for pedestrians is more spacious."
With the arrangement of a large LED screen at the old location of the "Shark Jaw" building, Ms. Hang thinks it needs to be decorated to become more lively and eye-catching.
Sharing after the exercise session around Hoan Kiem Lake, Mr. Kieu Tuan (Hoan Kiem ward) said that Dong Kinh - Nghia Thuc square is now airy, with stone benches, trees and flowers arranged harmoniously, bringing comfort to people.
Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Bao Loan also expressed satisfaction with the new look of Dong Kinh - Nghia Thuc Square. "After the demolition of the 'Shark Jaw' building, this square was renovated to be more spacious and airy. I strongly support Hanoi city to renovate more spaces like this," he said.
Mr. Ton (in Hoan Kiem ward) said: "Since the square was renovated, I see the landscape is more beautiful, people's lives are more comfortable. I and many people living around here are very satisfied."
Mr. Ton commented that the renovated Thuy Ta restaurant recalls the beauty of the years 1971 - 1972, when people still lined up to buy coffee and sponge cakes and then sat in the yard to enjoy them.
Besides the compliments, the new look of Dong Kinh - Nghia Thuc Square also makes many people wonder, even thinking that it is not as beautiful as before the renovation. "I think the previous 'Shark Jaw' building was more beautiful, this modern LED screen is not harmonious. People will gradually get used to the new look of Dong Kinh - Nghia Thuc Square, but it will probably take a long time. For this square to become more beautiful, in my opinion, its architecture must be in harmony with the architecture of the surrounding space and buildings," said Mr. Nguyen Duc Giang Binh.
"I think installing LED screens here is unreasonable and unsightly. The design unit should decorate and review the color of the large screen to make it more aesthetically pleasing," a resident commented.
In response to the mixed opinions of the people, Mr. Nguyen Manh Cuong, Deputy Director of the Institute of Urban Planning and Architecture, Hanoi University of Civil Engineering (design unit) said that what is currently existing in the area of the old "shark jaw" building is only the first phase of phase 1 in the renovation and embellishment of the square. After this phase, the design unit will listen to and absorb feedback from the community to continue making adjustments.
In response to comparisons with the old "Shark Jaws" building, the Deputy Director of the Institute of Urban Planning and Architecture affirmed that the LED screen is not a replacement. After the "Shark Jaws" was demolished, the area became an open square - a new urban amenity. When the project at 7 Dinh Tien Hoang is completed, it will combine with the LED screen to create a more harmonious whole with the surrounding landscape.
