The couple were caught having sex on August 22 on the grounds of a shrine in Kesennuma – a small coastal town about 500km north of Tokyo – and were accused of disrespecting a place of worship.

Police arrested the man over concerns he might flee, but did not arrest the woman after concluding there was no risk of her fleeing.
The man has since been released from custody, but police have not released details of his punishment or clarified whether he was a tourist or a resident. Police added that such cases do not always result in deportation and may result in a fine.
While this incident is rare, there have been other cases of arrests for disrespecting Japanese shrines.
Last year, a 17-year-old Canadian boy was summoned for questioning for allegedly carving the name "Julian" with his fingernails into a wooden pillar at a UNESCO-listed shrine in the ancient city of Nara, local police said.
“The boy admitted to his actions and said he had no intention of harming Japanese culture,” a police official said. “He is now staying with his parents, who were with him when the incident occurred.”
Meanwhile in 2010, famous photographer Kishin Shinoyama was charged with public indecency and disrespect of a religious site for taking nude photos at a public cemetery.
