Ding Zheng (37 years old) and his mother Zou Hongyan (62 years old) from Hubei province, central China, have won the admiration of many Chinese netizens for their story of overcoming adversity. Ding Zheng was diagnosed with cerebral palsy due to medical negligence when he was born in 1988.
The doctor and her husband both advised Ms. Zou to abort the baby. However, Ms. Zou refused.
"I am his mother. I have taken good care of Ding since I was pregnant and will never give up no matter what happens," Zou recalled.
As Ding grew older, Zou noticed that her son was paralyzed on the right side of his body and had difficulty moving the left side of his body. However, Ding's intelligence was not affected by cerebral palsy.
Ms. Zou is a university lecturer. With her expertise, she believes she can raise her children to be successful.
She spent a year teaching Ding how to use chopsticks, not spoons, so that Ding would be able to integrate into society more easily.
This strong-willed mother never cried when she saw her son suffering in the rehabilitation center. Because when Mrs. Zou cried, her son would often cry louder.
In the 1990s, Zou earned just $14 a month and spent about $2 a week on her son’s rehabilitation. She also had to tutor and sell insurance to support her son.
Ms. Zou divorced her husband in 1998. Because he often discriminated against and neglected her son, her mother-in-law chose to stay with her to support her and her son.
Zou said the thing she hears most from her son is: "You can't do it," and she always replies: "Go for it."
Ding was a good student from elementary school to university. After taking the college entrance exam in 2007, he was accepted by many prestigious universities in China and finally chose the prestigious Peking University.
He continued his graduate studies at Peking University Law School. His teachers advised him to apply to Harvard Law School in the United States.
Ding completed his master's degree and passed the New York state bar exam in just one year. He now works as a legal advisor for a company in his hometown.
In a recent interview, Zou shared all of his son's records, including his birth certificate and transcript.
She emotionally said: "When I see my child succeed, I think about the scene where he was bullied and discriminated against by his classmates because of his disability. However, the long night eventually passed."
Many Chinese social media users were moved by Ms. Zou's unconditional love for her son.
"She is a wonderful mother, giving all her support and love to her son," one user shared.
Another user commented: "The mother and grandmother stayed behind while the father chose to run away. Women are indeed the pillars of the family."
"She is a wise mother who taught her son about dignity, skills and confidence," one user exclaimed.
