On September 6, a representative of the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases said the patient had a history of hepatitis B but did not go for a regular health check-up.
For two years, he drank male papaya flowers soaked in honey every day without permission, believing it was a health-improving remedy promoted online.

Recently, when symptoms of fatigue and jaundice appeared, the patient was treated at a medical facility but did not improve, so he was transferred to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
Here, the doctor determined that he had cholestatic hepatitis, which led to jaundice, yellow eyes, and abnormally high liver enzymes, 1,000 times higher than normal. The definitive diagnosis was acute liver failure due to an outbreak of hepatitis B virus, combined with the improper use of folk remedies.
According to liver specialists, this is a typical case showing the risks when people arbitrarily use traditional medicine without consulting a specialist.
Male papaya flowers are used in traditional medicine to support the treatment of a number of diseases such as diabetes, poor digestion, and respiratory disorders thanks to active ingredients such as papain, gallic acid, beta-carotene, and phenol, which have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.
However, using this flower requires extreme caution because it can cause side effects, especially for pregnant women, children, people with cold constitutions, diarrhea or pollen allergies.
Abuse or misuse can cause symptoms such as abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, or more dangerous if the user has an underlying medical condition that is not well controlled.
Doctors said that if this patient had been diagnosed and treated for hepatitis B early, his health could have been completely controlled. However, the long-term use of "tonic" drugs on the basis of chronic liver disease had made the condition more serious, leading to acute liver failure and severe cholestasis.
Experts recommend that people should not arbitrarily use folk remedies or advertised products of unknown origin. All drugs, including traditional medicine, should be used under the guidance of a doctor or specialist. In addition, it is necessary to maintain the habit of regular health check-ups, especially for people with chronic diseases, for early detection and timely treatment.
