Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) results at Tam Anh General Hospital Hanoi determined that Ms. Thuy's left breast implant was torn about 3 mm, the bottom of the implant was effusion, and the inside of the breast implant had degenerated.
Dr. Hoang Thi Phuong Lan, Plastic Surgery Clinic - Department of Orthopedics and Trauma, performed surgery to remove the patient's silicone and mucus, then removed the breast implant, peeled off the fibrous capsule, and took tissue samples for pathology to check for tissue inflammation and granulomas (silicoma) eroding healthy tissue.
Four days after surgery, Ms. Thuy had the drainage removed and was discharged from the hospital, but she was advised to avoid strenuous exercise and wear a chest shaping bra 24/7 for the first month to help the tissue heal and stabilize.
According to Dr. Lan, breast implants have high strength and durability but do not last forever. The average lifespan is about 10-15 years depending on the type of implant and the patient's constitution. After this time, the implant may degenerate, leak or rupture, causing silicone to spill into the chest cavity. At this time, the patient may have an immune response disorder, swollen lymph nodes, redness, and even form tumors around the implant, or more seriously, deform and abscess the chest area. Some cases like Ms. Thuy's do not have obvious symptoms. If not detected and treated promptly, it can lead to chronic inflammation, breast deformity, or deep tissue infections that are difficult to treat.
Doctors recommend that people who have had breast implants after 10 years should have regular check-ups 1-2 times with ultrasound or MRI to detect early the risk of rupture or fibrous capsule inflammation.
After 15 years, consider replacing or removing the implant, especially if there are signs of degeneration, fibrosis, or abnormal fluid. Do not delay examination even if there are no symptoms. Because breast implant rupture can occur silently for many years.
