Phuong My Chi not noticed from the beginning when participating in Sing! Asia. It was not until the performance "Bong phu hoa" was widely shared on social media platforms with her high-pitched, emotional voice that Phuong My Chi's competition at Sing! Asia was noticed and watched by a large audience.
Before "The Shadow of Vanity" made a big splash, Phuong My Chi had many performances imbued with Vietnamese cultural identity attending Sing! Asia with international friends.
On the Sing! Asia stage, Phuong My Chi performed the song “Buon trang” – a composition by the group DTAP in the album Vu tru co bay released in 2023. “Buon trang” was inspired by the poem “Day thon Vi Da” by poet Han Mac Tu.
In front of international friends, Phuong My Chi recited famous verses in Vietnamese poetry for decades: Why don't you come back to Vi village/Look at the sunlight on the areca trees/Whose garden is so lush and green like jade/Bamboo leaves cover the square face...
“Rock Grain of Rice” was also brought by Phuong My Chi from the album Vu tru co bay to the Sing! Asia stage. In this composition, DTAP and Phuong My Chi expressed their special love for Vietnamese culture from the story of rice grains to the emotional combination with the melodies and folk songs of the Southwest region.
Opening the performance of “Rock Grain of Rice”, Phuong My Chi had an emotional variation of the song, “Vietnam has white rice and clear water/ Whoever goes there doesn’t want to leave”.
In "Bong phu hoa", Phuong My Chi not only shows off her powerful voice and soaring high notes, but also tells the story of Vietnam to the world .
"The Shadow of Vanity" was composed by DTAP and Phuong My Chi based on the literary work "The Story of a Nam Xuong Girl".
Speaking to Lao Dong reporters, the DTAP group – the people behind Phuong My Chi’s impressive performances at Sing! Asia – said, “From the very beginning of Sing! Asia, we understood that this was not just a playground to showcase artist techniques or personalities, but an opportunity for Vietnamese music to step out into the region with a clear cultural identity, depth and modern enough to be listened to seriously.
The “problem” is always how, within 3-4 minutes of performance, listeners can feel the spirit of Vietnamese culture, see Phuong My's own musical story, and see the aesthetic production thinking and clear strategy of Vietnamese producers.
According to DTAP, they want to bring a Vietnamese cultural story to tell to friends around the world at Sing! Asia through music and Phuong My Chi's voice.
“Working with Phuong My Chi is a very interesting creative journey. Chi has strong inner strength and profound cultural thinking. Each performance requires careful research of folk materials and performance methods, to both honor identity and highlight Chi’s own spirit” – DTAP said.
Sharing about the inspiration from national culture and national literature to incorporate into musical compositions that reflect the breath of the times, DTAP shared: “Vietnamese culture is an endless treasure. But to bring those materials closer to the audience, especially international audiences with language barriers, requires careful research, respect for the original, and a storytelling approach that is appropriate in terms of music and visuals.
We always spend time researching, and if necessary, we will consult experts to know which parts need to be kept intact and which are spaces for us to be creative. How can each cultural element always blend into the spirit of the song, be lively and touch the listeners' emotions?
Phuong My Chi will enter the second semi-final of Sing! Asia on the evening of July 18.
DTAP when tracking Phuong My Chi performing at Sing! Asia commented, “As someone who has accompanied Phuong My Chi since the early days of coming up with ideas for each performance, the feeling when watching Chi perform at Sing! Asia was very different. At that time, we no longer saw “the artist we were working with”, but saw a young person who was truly mastering the stage, confidently telling her musical story to the whole region with her own identity. That is what makes us very proud, because of the success of the performance and because of the true journey of maturity that Chi is going through”.
