Among hundreds of comments from Tuoi Tre Online readers after Vietnam's 0-4 defeat to Malaysia, most readers expressed sympathy for the team, saying that the "golden star warriors" tried their best, but Malaysia with its naturalized players was really too strong.
Naturalizing the entire team is very difficult for Asian teams, not just Vietnam.
A reader with the email address lstu****@gmail.com shared: "We lost so badly. Besides, they are all naturalized, so we can't blame them. Western players play football, not Malaysians!"
"There is nothing surprising, winning or losing is normal. Vietnam's physical strength, physique, and tactical skills have not improved much, we need to continue investing in modern trends like European countries," reader Nguyen Ha continued.
Agreeing with this point of view, reader Xuanlan expressed: "Malaysia's naturalization is too great, too much, all of the players are of high value, with a place in the squads of European clubs.
We fought with all our might, there is nothing to be ashamed of. Always believe in and support the Vietnamese team.
While Indonesia and Malaysia have naturalized their entire quality squads, it will be very difficult for teams in Asia, let alone Southeast Asia."
Many readers even mocked the naturalization policy of Malaysian football. A reader with the email address men***@gmail.com wrote: "I'm playing against tall European players, not against Malaysians!"
"A national team with 9 naturalized players. All naturalized players from Europe and America," reader Le Van Vinh shared before the defeat of the Vietnamese team.
Sharing the same sentiment, reader Momo comforted: "9 naturalized players from all continents. We are playing against a European football club. It's too hard for the Vietnamese players."
Difficult problem, what solution is needed?
Besides the consoling and sharing opinions, many opinions said that the Vietnamese team lost because they were weaker, and should not blame the defeat on the opponent's naturalization.
The 0-4 defeat to Malaysia in the match last night, June 10, is undeniable.
According to readers, from this failure, Vietnamese football needs to seriously look back to have a direction for development in the future, to avoid being left behind by competitors.
"Winning and losing is normal so we can look back and have a direction to develop our country's football. Through this match, we see that the balance of power has been lost, so there is nothing to be sad about. It's just a matter of how to develop a strategy in the future," commented a reader with email hodu****@gmail.com.

"Vietnam does not lack naturalized players, but the important thing is the way the VFF (Vietnam Football Federation) operates. Don't blame the coaches and players. Try looking around us and be brave enough to look at yourself," a reader named Chi commented.
Proposing solutions to make Vietnamese football stronger in the future, reader Minh Nguyet wrote: "Vietnam only has two paths: One is to naturalize almost all players like other countries, two is to speed up youth training like Japan and Korea, then we have a chance to beat them."
A reader nicknamed Gia shared: "Now is the time for us to sit down and calculate how many players we can naturalize from now until March 2026, to compete with Malaysia in the second leg?
This is a very difficult problem, but we have no other viable option."
"VFF should reconsider the option of naturalizing more players to welcome Malaysia in the second leg. I think the coach should let Quang Hai play from the start for the Vietnamese team," reader Dang Phong advised.
The heavy defeat of the Vietnamese team against the naturalized players of Malaysia is really a hot topic.
Where are the players, where is the money to naturalize the players?
The question now is whether Vietnam should participate deeply in the naturalization race like Malaysia and Indonesia or is there another solution?
Naturalization is not a simple matter because it requires two factors: There must be a good and abundant source of players of Vietnamese origin; the second is the financial issue. To naturalize players, the policies for athletes must be good to attract them to contribute to their homeland instead of playing for other countries.
However, according to assessments from the sports industry and VFF, the number of athletes and players of Vietnamese origin with special talent in the world today is not much.
Not to mention the salary, bonus, and treatment regime for Vietnamese sports talents are currently considered extremely low, equal, and unable to attract resources even domestically, let alone abroad.
