Spanish workers get paid leave if the weather is too bad

VTC NewsVTC News02/12/2024

According to RT , the Spanish government has passed a new labor law allowing workers in the country to take four days off with full pay due to the "climate emergency".

The law was passed just a month after more than 200 Spaniards in the Valencia region died in historic floods.

Also according to RT , the above law was issued and took effect from November 29 after being approved by the Spanish Council of Ministers.

Labor Minister Yolanda Diaz explained that paid leave days will be applied when civil defense and meteorological organizations issue severe weather warnings, and affirmed that people will be protected from all natural disasters.

If a weather emergency lasts longer than four days, employers will be able to extend “climate holidays” to workers. Employers’ losses during the holidays will be covered by the government.

At least 229 people died in flash floods that submerged several towns in the Valencia region of eastern Spain in early November. Locals have accused Valencia leader Carlos Mazon of failing to issue timely warnings at the time of the disaster.

Despite public outcry, Mr Mazon refused to resign, saying the Valencia government had not been informed by the government's water monitoring agency about the severity of the heavy rains.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez and King Felipe VI have also been criticised by Valencia residents who survived the flash floods for their lack of attention to disaster preparedness.

To partially overcome the consequences, the Spanish government has launched an economic aid package worth 16.6 billion euros (17.5 billion USD) for victims and families affected by the flood.
