The US Department of Housing and Urban Development estimates that there will be 771,480 homeless people on a single night in January 2024, an 18% increase from 2023.
According to the annual report released by the US Department of Housing and Urban Development on December 27, the above figure is equivalent to the rate of 23 homeless people for every 10,000 people in the US. This is also the largest one-year increase recorded in recent years.

The report shows that the number of children experiencing homelessness in one night is nearly 150,000, an increase of 33% compared to 2023. The largest increase in the period 2023-2024 is in the group of children under 18 years old, with nearly 150,000 children experiencing homelessness in just one night in 2024, an increase of 33% compared to 2023.
Despite the overall increase, the report noted progress in reducing homelessness among veterans. The number of homeless veterans fell nearly 8%, from 35,574 in 2023 to 32,882 in 2024.
People of color, African Americans, or African Americans remain overrepresented among the homeless. Although people of color make up 12% of the U.S. population, they make up 32% of the homeless population.
In a statement, US Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Adrianne Todman emphasized the importance of efforts to prevent and end homelessness.
“No American should face homelessness,” she said. The Biden administration is “committed to ensuring every family has access to the affordable, safe, quality housing they deserve.”
According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition, American households are feeling the pressure from housing costs, with median rents in January 2024 20% higher than in January 2021.
Other factors that contribute to homelessness include stagnant wages among low- and middle-income households, natural disasters that displace people, increased immigration, and the suspension of homelessness prevention programs introduced during the Covid-19 pandemic.
