Duong Dong Market currently has 428 stalls selling a variety of products. However, many vendors arrange their goods to encroach on common walkways, especially flammable items such as: fabric, paper, plastic... Some vendors also use substandard electrical equipment, old wires, overlapping sockets, posing a risk of electrical short circuits, fires and explosions. In addition, the fire extinguisher system in some areas is old or improperly arranged.
Lieutenant Colonel Ngo Duc Thao - Captain of the Phu Quoc Fire Fighting and Rescue Team under the Fire Prevention and Fighting Police Department and Rescue of the Provincial Police said: "The unit has implemented many measures to enhance fire safety, strictly handling violations of allowing goods to encroach on emergency exits, using electrical equipment in violation of regulations... Training on the use of portable fire extinguishers and escape skills has also been deployed to each business household."
When the weather is hot and the number of tourists increases, Duong Dong market must tighten fire safety. Mr. Pham Hong Thai - Head of the Market Management Board said: "We re-check the entire electrical system, add fire extinguishers, and plan fire drills for traders. Propaganda is also increased through loudspeakers and regular meetings." In addition, many traders proactively equip their stalls with fire extinguishers, arrange goods neatly, and fully participate in training sessions. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hoa, a dry goods trader, shared: "Before, I did not know how to use a fire extinguisher, but thanks to the training, now I know how to handle the first steps if there is a small fire. The most important thing is to know where the exit is, and not let goods block the way."
Fire safety is not only the responsibility of the authorities but also requires the cooperation of all traders and people. With the initiative from many sides, the motto "4 on-site" will be fully promoted, contributing to building a safe, civilized and developed environment for people.
