In 2014, a 17-year-old girl with big dreams received shocking news from her doctor: she had glomerulonephritis. The terrible disease forced Nguyen Thi Oanh to stop exercising and follow an extremely strict lifestyle. Oanh did not know if she could continue pursuing her passion for athletics. Hundreds, thousands of negative thoughts, plus her face was swollen and deformed, pushed her further into a deadlock. At that moment, the door seemed to slam shut.
But Nguyen Thi Oanh did not give up. She felt the energy growing in her body, even in her dreams she saw herself running happily, with cheers of encouragement. Oanh was determined to return to the running track, initially only 2-3km, then gradually increasing to 10km. After years of self-training and fighting her illness, Oanh believed she could return to compete at the top level. The gold and silver medals at the 5th Asian Beach Games held in Da Nang in 2016 were the stepping stones for Nguyen Thi Oanh's return. Now, when thinking back to the most difficult time in her career, Oanh is still haunted. But only through those great challenges did she appreciate her health and forge an iron will. " What I always keep in mind is to try harder every day, every training session and every tournament. I set goals for myself and have to overcome them," Oanh shared.
Not only her forte in the 3,000m obstacle course, she also tried the 1,500m, 5,000m and 10,000m, so that Vietnamese athletics had a day dominating the SEA Games in all 4 events, with only one name: Nguyen Thi Oanh. Notably, at the 32nd SEA Games, Nguyen Thi Oanh did the unthinkable, winning 2 gold medals in 2 running distances with a rest period of less than 30 minutes. This is an unprecedented and unbelievable achievement in sports, especially athletics. The "little pepper girl" has surpassed her own limits, leaving experts "stunned" and unable to explain.
Closing 2023 with many highlights, Nguyen Thi Oanh completed a golden "hat-trick" at the national athletics championship. In every arena, Oanh has made serious preparations and fought with all her might. Having completed the set goals, Oanh "in" rewarded herself with time to rest, visit her parents, and go out with friends to recharge her energy. "From now until the end of 2023, I will spend time for myself, for the recovery process, to achieve the best physical condition, ready for the next goals in 2024", said the runner from Bac Giang .
" Superwoman of the track" or " champion without lungs " are the nicknames that fans give to Nguyen Thi Oanh. The small girl shows extraordinary ability to complete her mission excellently, becoming a typical image, an inspirational example not only for Vietnamese sports but also for the whole Southeast Asian region.
The runner born in 1995 is worthy of being a symbol of the perseverance and will to overcome of Vietnamese women.
