On the morning of June 12, Nguyen Thi That overcame many strong opponents to successfully defend her gold medal in the mass start event of the 2023 Asian Cycling Championship. The tournament taking place in Rayong, Thailand is also one of the bases for determining the place to attend the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Nguyen Thi That finished first with a time of 2 hours 51 minutes 41 seconds, faster than Chinese athlete Sun Jiajun. Third place in this event was Maneephan Jutatip.
Achievements of Nguyen Thi That
The Vietnamese athlete won the gold medal after a dramatic sprint race with her opponent. Sun Jiajun had a moment to take the lead at the end. However, Nguyen Thi That still managed to regain the first position and cross the finish line first.
With this victory, Nguyen Thi That can become the first Vietnamese athlete to qualify for the 2024 Paris Olympics. The Vietnamese cycling team is awaiting confirmation from the International Cycling Union (UCI). According to the format announced by the UCI in April 2023, athletes who win gold and silver medals at the Asian Championship can get a wild card to attend the 2024 Olympics.
At the 32nd SEA Games, Nguyen Thi That won the gold medal in the team start event. The athlete from An Giang defeated Jutatip Maneephan of Thailand.
Previously, at the Tour of Thailand cycling race, Nguyen Thi That only ranked 5th in overall results but won 2 titles: best sprinter and best hill climber.
Two years ago, Nguyen Thi That missed the chance to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics (postponed until 2021 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic). At that time, the Asian Championship was canceled, causing the Vietnamese racer (the defending champion) to lose the chance to compete for a place at the Olympics.
