
According to the company's leaders, to have the first batch of pig iron after a long period of the factory having to stop operating due to various reasons was a process of great effort and determination of the company's leaders, engineers and workers. Especially the drastic participation of the provincial government in supporting to remove difficulties and obstacles for the unit.

Currently, the iron ore raw material source for the factory's pig iron production is licensed to be transported as 194,678 tons of iron ore remaining from the Quy Xa iron mine. The company is focusing on completing procedures and making recommendations to central ministries and branches to be approved for preliminary processing and use of 5 million tons of exploited Deluvi ore as raw materials.


It is expected that on average, the factory will produce 1,000 tons of standard pig iron per day to be smelted into steel billets to serve the production of rolled steel.
According to the assessment of Vietnam-China Minerals and Metallurgy Company Limited (VTM), after the blast furnace was reopened, the pig iron production line has been running stably; the first batch of products has achieved good quality.

Lao Cai Iron and Steel Plant started construction in April 2011 and went into operation in 2014. The project is divided into two phases, of which phase I has a designed capacity of 500,000 tons of pig iron/year and a steel billet workshop with a capacity of 500,000 tons/year. Phase II will double the capacity by building an additional steel rolling line and expanding the factory's construction site.
