Photographer Van Quang Duc was born in 1915, is 109 years old this year, is one of 71 founding members of the Vietnam Association of Photographers, the first generation member of the Hai Hung Association of Literature and Arts in 1978, currently works at the Photography Department of the Hai Duong Association of Literature and Arts, member of the International Federation of Photographic Art FIAP. He is currently the oldest member of the Vietnam Association of Photographers.

From hobby to passion

Artist Van Quang Duc.

Born and raised in Hanoi , studied photography at the age of 18, participated in the resistance war, peace, he brought his family to Kinh Mon district town to live as a service photographer and still continuously pursue his passion for artistic photography.

His works are vivid, authentic, not flowery, recalling the historical imprint of Kinh Mon land, focusing on the farmers who work hard from dawn to dusk. Nature and people are also endless sources of inspiration, the rivers in his photos tell the story of the life of labor, production, building the homeland and the country according to the ebb and flow. Festivals, religions, beliefs - the soul of the national historical and cultural relics are also preserved by him.

In addition, NSNA Van Quang Duc also brought viewers back to the historical moment of the formation and development of Vicem Hoang Thach Cement Company, located right in the limestone valley by the Da Bach River, a project with the largest scale and most modern technology in Southeast Asia at that time, starting construction on May 19, 1977.

Among his thousands of precious photos, valuable in terms of art and history, many were exhibited internationally: in the Soviet Union in 1967 (The Way Back of Rice), Second Prize in the Photo Exhibition in the German Democratic Republic in 1968 (Getting Sunlight), in Romania in 1969 (Afternoon on Kinh Thay River). The work "The Way of Plowing with Dedication", Bronze Prize of the Vietnam Union of Literature and Arts Associations in 1968...

Artist Tran Quang Thong, Member of the Executive Committee of the Hai Duong Literature and Arts Association, Head of the Photography Department, in the Introduction to the book wrote: “By using the method of recording reality in the art of photography and the artist's love, the photos of Artist Van Quang Duc have praised the beauty of the people and the land of the East in labor, construction and fighting to protect the Fatherland. To celebrate the 79th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2024) and National Day September 2, on August 19, the photo exhibition and launch of the photo book "Moments of Time" by NSNA Van Quang Duc took place in Kinh Mon town, Hai Duong province.

The photo exhibition introduces 109 works, corresponding to his 109th birthday, honoring the great contribution of the old artist to photography. At the exhibition, 3 works were selected for auction: “The Way Home of Rice”, “Harvest Rhythm”, “Afternoon on Kinh Thay River”.

On this occasion, a photo book titled “Moments of Time” was also launched, 106 pages thick, published by Fine Arts Publishing House, including 125 typical works, divided into 5 main contents: Imprints of a time of bombs and bullets, Stories from the rivers, Kinh Mon - Space and time, Golden season on the fields, Awakened rock land.
