The Israeli Prime Minister's Office confirmed that the attack occurred early this morning, October 19. Two UAVs believed to have been launched from Lebanon targeted Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's residence in the coastal town of Caesarea, triggering sirens in the capital Tel Aviv.
Israeli air defense systems shot down the UAVs. No one was injured in the attack.
According to the Israeli Prime Minister's Office, Prime Minister Netanyahu and his wife Sara were not at home at the time of the attack.
No individual or organization has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
The Israeli military is investigating why a fault in the warning system caused sirens to not go off in Caesarea before the attack.
Video posted to social media appears to show Israeli attack helicopters hunting for drones further north. Sirens were only heard in the Gliot area north of Tel Aviv, home to the Israel Defense Forces intelligence headquarters and the Mossad.
"We heard the helicopter above and felt like something was wrong but there was no siren so we weren't too worried. But then suddenly there was a loud bang and we didn't know if it was the UAV being intercepted or the UAV hitting its target. It was clearly a real accident without warning. It was worrying, luckily no one was hurt," said a resident of Caesarea.
Ofek Mor, another resident, said: "Suddenly we heard a buzzing sound, not sure what was happening, then there was a big, very strong explosion. The explosion site was a walking distance from my house, very quickly we understood what had happened."
On the night of October 18 and early morning of October 19, many towns and cities in northern Israel were also attacked by UAVs and rockets, but there were no casualties.
Hezbollah this week declared that its war against Israel had entered a new phase. Hezbollah used precision-guided missiles to strike Israeli territory for the first time.
Earlier, the Israeli military said a UAV launched from Lebanon hit a building in Caesarea, but did not specify which building. Meanwhile, two UAVs that entered Israeli airspace were intercepted.
The incident comes amid escalating tensions between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon. Since late last month, Israel has stepped up its campaign of attacks on Hezbollah targets inside Lebanon, killing a number of leaders and senior commanders and destroying weapons depots.
