2014 World Cup champion retires

Centre-back Mats Hummels has confirmed he will retire at the end of this season.

Hummels decided to hang up his boots.

Sharing on his personal page on April 4, Hummels wrote: "My emotions are in turmoil at the moment. It's a time that no player can avoid. After more than 18 years of playing, football has given me a lot. I will end my career this summer."

The German centre-back also expressed his gratitude to those who have accompanied him throughout the journey, from coaches to teammates. "I know that this journey has been important for me. It's been great to experience it. To get to where you are today, you need the right coaches, the right time, good physical condition and reliable teammates," Hummels added.

Hummels' contract with Roma expires in the summer of 2025. There are no signs of a renewal. Since the start of the season, the former Dortmund centre-back has played 12 Serie A matches, 5 Europa League matches and 1 Coppa Italia match.

Hummels, 36, is a product of Bayern Munich's academy. He made his name when he decided to move to Dortmund in 2008 and became a mainstay of the team. Here, Hummels made a deep impression and became one of the leading central defenders in German football.

At club level, Hummels won five Bundesliga titles, three German Cups and six German Super Cups during his career. The centre-back also reached the Champions League final twice, but only finished as runners-up in the 2012/13 and 2023/24 seasons.

In the German national team, Hummels had 78 appearances and won the 2014 World Cup.
