AI taking over all human jobs is still a controversial prediction - Photo: Medium
According to a VNA reporter in Beijing, a recent study on competitiveness in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) shows that the size of the AI industry in China has exceeded 700 billion yuan (about 97.7 billion USD) by 2024, maintaining a growth rate of more than 20% for many years.
According to the report, AI not only promotes the development of new technology industries such as robots, drones or smart homes, but also penetrates deeply into the real economy , creating many new fields and business models. AI-related positions have become a "delicious cake" in the job market.
Just one day after receiving his diploma, Liu Zekun was recruited into the delivery department of Meituan, a famous Chinese technology and retail company.
Liu Zekun will work as a high-performance computing engineer, a job that uses technologies like parallel computing and heterogeneous computing to optimize the performance of processing tasks.
Similarly, Le Khoa Lam (Li Kelin) was also recently recruited to work at Kunlun Digital Technology Co., Ltd., a member of China National Petroleum Corporation, to take on a job related to digital intelligence and information technology, right after graduating.
These examples show that the demand for AI human resources is growing rapidly in China. However, that demand is not only increasing in the technology sector but also spreading to state-owned enterprises, where AI is being applied in the process of deep digital transformation.
According to recruitment platform Zhaopin.com, in the first week of the 2025 spring recruitment season, the number of job seekers in the AI industry increased by 33.4% compared to the same period last year. AI engineers rose to the top of the list of most sought-after occupations, with a 69.6% increase.
Alibaba Group has opened more than 3,000 positions in its 2026 recruitment season, of which nearly half are related to AI.
According to Liu Zekun, AI may have been just a theoretical concept in the past, but now it has been put into practice and applied to every aspect of human life. Now, as AI technology is expanded to more industries, job opportunities are also becoming more diverse.
Because of the increasing demand for AI talent, the salaries that companies pay for these positions are also very attractive. For example, AI model development company DeepSeek announced that the starting salary for new graduates ranges from 20,000 to 90,000 yuan/month (about 2,800 to 12,500 USD), depending on the position.
Another company, Yushu Technology, offers salaries of up to 1.3 million yuan ($181,000) a year for its robotics algorithm experts. To fill the AI talent gap, universities and colleges in China are also accelerating the placement of AI majors.
In 2019, AI was officially included in the list of undergraduate majors. After that, in just a few years, more than 500 Chinese universities opened AI majors or established specialized institutes in this field.
Last year, Tsinghua University, Zhejiang University, Fudan University, etc. all launched comprehensive and multidisciplinary training programs on AI.
In the 2025 college entrance exam, China's Ministryof Education added 29 new majors, including AI education, intelligent audio-visual technology, and digital theater.
Tsinghua University plans to establish a new General Education Institute, focusing on integrating AI with various disciplines. Tongji University opens an elite class of AI integrated with the fields of science, medicine, and art.
Meanwhile, Beijing Normal University combines dual bachelor's degrees in Chinese literature and AI, and will add an AI education major in April 2025.
In addition, in order to promote AI human resource training and connection, earlier this year, the Chinese Ministry of Education requested universities and colleges to implement projects to connect labor supply and demand in the AI field, and strengthen cooperation with enterprises to train and recruit talents in accordance with the actual needs of the labor market.
