On the morning of August 29, a strong typhoon, Shanshan, made landfall near Satsumasendai City in Kagoshima Prefecture, southwestern Japan, bringing heavy rain and extremely strong winds. The Japan Meteorological Agency issued a special typhoon warning, which is very rare here, for most areas of Kagoshima Prefecture, advising people in affected areas to be on high alert for natural disasters; and advising public transport operators to cancel trains and flights.
According to the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA), Typhoon Shanshan is moving at a speed of 15km/h, with winds of 216km/h, and an atmospheric pressure of 955 hectopascals at its center. The storm is continuing to move north. Rainfall is forecast to reach 600mm within 24 hours in some areas on Kyushu Island. The JMA stressed that the slow movement of the storm could increase the danger, causing strong winds and prolonged heavy rain in some areas.
According to the Kagoshima and neighboring Miyazaki prefectures, at least nine people have been injured by Typhoon Shanshan as of August 28. In central Japan, the Gamagori city government in Aichi Prefecture confirmed three deaths and two injuries after a landslide buried their homes.
Kyushu Railway Company (JR Kyushu), which suspended some shinkansen bullet train operations on the evening of August 28, said it would suspend all bullet train and other rail services on the island of Kyushu on the afternoon of August 29. East Japan Railway Company (JR West) announced the cancellation of some bullet train services on the section from Hakata Station in northern Kyushu to Hiroshima Station in western Japan. Meanwhile, Japan Airlines and All Nippon Airways have canceled many flights to and from airports in the region.
Toyota Motor Corp. and other major automakers plan to suspend operations at some plants on Aug. 29, mainly in areas affected by the storm.
