A startup from Kobe University (Japan) has just created a special perfume with a pleasant scent like 'newborn baby's head', with the hope of bringing a sense of relaxation to parents during the stressful period of raising children.
The product, called “Poupon pure” (poupon in French means “baby”), is designed with a floral and fruity scent that feels warm and fresh but not strong. According to research, a newborn’s pleasant scent usually only lasts about 6 weeks after birth.
Professor Emeritus Mamiko Ozaki, who specializes in olfactory physiology at Kobe University and is currently CEO of Scent Fest Company, is behind this special project.
After many years of researching scent-signaling pheromones in insects, she turned to the field of applying scent science to humans, with the hope of contributing to reducing stress in child care as well as child abuse.
To develop the product, Scent Fest collaborated with Hamamatsu University Hospital, collecting scent samples from the heads of about 20 newborns. Chemical analysis identified 37 scent components, of which nonanal - a floral-scented compound - is considered key to creating a pleasant feeling.
Experiments on a group of volunteers including students, parents, grandparents and childcare workers showed that this scent activated brain regions related to positive emotions, evoking a feeling of “pleasure” and a desire to smell it again.
According to Ms. Ozaki, it is possible that preverbal infants secrete odor compounds as a “chemical message” to encourage parents to communicate more gently and care. When babies cry continuously, parents easily lose patience. But at the same time, the pleasant scent that babies emit is like a message: “Be gentle with your baby,” she shared.
Poupon pure is now available online at Scent Fest's official website, priced at 2,970 yen (about $20) for a 5 ml bottle, including tax and shipping. The company has also filed patents for the ingredients and manufacturing method in Japan, the US, and the European Union./.
