Iran beat Japan thanks to a penalty in extra time
Japan proactively pushed up their formation to play an attacking game against Iran. Coach Moriyasu's team controlled the ball well but could not easily approach Iran's goal. Although they controlled the ball much less than Japan, Iran's counterattacks were more coherent than their opponents.
The surprise broke out in the 28th minute, Morita had a personal breakthrough, overcoming three Iranian players and then finishing from the edge of the penalty area, defeating goalkeeper Beiranvand to open the score of the match. Having taken the lead, Japan's play did not improve.

After the first 45 minutes without creating any danger to the opponent's goal, Iran entered the second half with more determination than before. Coach Ghalenoei's team found the equalizer 1-1 in the 55th minute thanks to Mohebi.
Iran continued to play better than Japan in the rest of the match, the team from West Asia shook the Japanese net for the second time in the 63rd minute but the referee did not recognize the goal due to offside.
When the match entered the final minute of injury time, it seemed like the two teams would go into extra time, but Iran was suddenly awarded a penalty, Itakura fouled the opponent in the penalty area after a ball between him and Tomiyasu. Jahanbakhsh successfully kicked the penalty, sealing a 2-1 victory for Iran.
