Many fruit trees in the city

Over the years, along the traffic routes in the heart of the city of our province, there are quite a lot of fruit trees growing. The presence of these trees has contributed to bringing to the urban area a fresh natural environment and beautiful landscape.

The star apple tree in Trang Bang often bears many ripe fruits.

Shade in the heart of the city

In Trang Bang ward, Trang Bang town, there is an ancient banyan tree on the side of National Highway 22B, next to the fence of Trang Bang VocationalEducation - Continuing Education Center.

The "old man" has been here for so long that many people in Trang call Trang Bang Continuing Education Center "The Thi Tree School". The Thi tree is over 8m high, with a wide canopy and a diameter of about 10m, and the base is about three arm spans long.

According to some local elders, when they grew up, they saw the fig tree here. It is estimated that the fig tree is over 100 years old. In previous years, the fig tree stood inside the fence of the Center's campus. Since Highway 22B was upgraded and the sidewalk was widened, the fence of the Center had to be moved back a bit. Since then, the fig tree has stood outside the fence.

When we visited, we saw many ripe fruits mixed with many other green fruits on the branches. At noon, the canopy of the fig tree became a shady place for some locals who work as “xe om” (motorbike taxis), pedicab drivers, and students waiting for their parents to pick them up.

Some students picked up the “wheel” custard apples that had just fallen, held them in their hands and inhaled the pleasant aroma. One student said: “I will not eat this custard apple but will take it home and put it on my bedside table as a souvenir.”

In Hoa Thanh town, there are also many fruit trees planted by the people along the roadside, both to create shade and to bring many other benefits. On the sidewalk of An Duong Vuong street, Long Thanh Bac ward, there is currently a large jackfruit tree with lush branches and leaves. Under the jackfruit tree is a small, nameless coffee shop. Next to the jackfruit tree is the Long Thanh Bac temple.

This place has become a destination for enjoying morning coffee and a stop for lunch for many locals and tourists every time they come to the temple. Mr. Cuong, 53 years old, the owner of the coffee shop, recalls: "This tree was planted by my brother-in-law 12 years ago to create shade."

According to the coffee shop owner, the breadfruit tree has large leaves, provides good shade, and rarely sheds its leaves. When the leaves fall, they are easy to collect, and do not require much effort to sweep like other trees. In particular, breadfruit leaves are a traditional medicine that can cure many diseases, so the family grows them to give to people who need treatment.

Breadfruit is processed into a number of delicious foods such as fried, boiled, cooked in curry... On average, this breadfruit tree harvests about 200 fruits each year, each fruit is larger than an adult's knee, weighs more than 1kg, and is sold at the market for up to 12,000 VND/kg.

“Sometimes traders come to buy ripe fruit, but my family doesn’t sell it, but saves it to give to neighbors. Someone asked us to ask for these fruits, and in a few days when they are ripe, people will come and pick them,” said Mr. Cuong.

Mr. Nen, a resident of Hoa Thanh town and an electrician, said he often comes to this cafe to drink coffee in the morning. Around the jackfruit tree, there are a few hammocks for people who want to lie down and rest. Therefore, at noon, Mr. Nen also likes to return to this cafe to take a nap and regain strength after a day of work.

Not only does Mr. Cuong’s coffee shop have fruit trees, a few dozen meters away, another family has a large mango tree in front of their yard. The tree is producing hundreds of fruits hanging from its branches. In the heat of the day, the lush green mangoes unintentionally create a pleasant feeling for people participating in traffic on the road.

The jackfruit tree provides shade for Mr. Cuong's family.

Green city

There are also many types of fruit trees in Tay Ninh city, some of which have become familiar landmarks to many people. Just counting the tamarind species, on the slope of Tua Hai street (Ward 1) there is an ancient tamarind tree, estimated to be over 100 years old. This tamarind tree has become the landmark Cay Me slope.

Last year, the "tamarind tree" fell after a heavy rain and strong wind. The authorities trimmed the top and branches and replanted it. After a period of dedicated care by artisans in the ornamental flower industry, the tamarind tree has now sprouted and grown again.

Not only on this slope are there tamarind trees, but many other places in the city have many other ancient tamarind trees that are still flourishing. Behind the nearly 130 -year-old house of Governor Nguyen Van Kien (Ward 2, Ward 1) there is an ancient tamarind tree that is no less than the tamarind tree on the slope of Tua Hai Street.

Mr. Nguyen Anh Kiet - the 5th generation descendant of Governor Nguyen Van Kien said that his family often trims the branches of the tamarind tree every time the rainy season comes. Thanks to that, the "old tamarind" still stands firm against all storms and strong winds. From Cay Me slope, a few hundred meters in the direction of Tan Bien district, there is also a fairly large tamarind tree, planted along Tua Hai road.

Many other tamarind trees have been used by local people to open shops selling food and drinks, such as Cay Me restaurant (Le Loi street, ward 3) and Cay Me coffee shop (30.4 street, ward 3).

In addition, along the roads in the inner city of Tay Ninh, there are some types of trees that are planted by the people and leave many unforgettable impressions. On Nguyen Thai Hoc Street, Ward 3, there is a type of tree that bears very beautiful and strange fruits, which the owner calls the velvet rose tree.

Previously, when coming to learn about this tree, a man in the family said: “This house was built in 1937. When they built the house, my wife’s parents planted these trees to create shade for the yard.” Initially, his wife’s parents planted three rose trees in a straight row. In recent years, the trees have grown too big and the branches and leaves are too thick, so the homeowner cut down a tree in the middle.

The remaining two trees are each about 15m tall, with a trunk about 1m wide, straight, with a wide canopy and large leaves. The branches and leaves are so dense that sunlight cannot reach the ground. On the branches are many round orange fruits, very beautiful to look at. Every year, the tree bears fruit in the summer, the outside of the fruit is covered with a layer of fine hair like a brown tennis ball.

This fruit has a beautiful shape, color, light fragrance, thick skin, very suitable for display and worship. Unfortunately, recently, two rose trees were cut down to build a new, more spacious and beautiful house.

Mr. Cuong introduces his family's jackfruit tree.

Walking around some other routes, everyone will easily come across some other fruit trees. Sometimes they are luxuriant with leaves, sometimes they are swinging beautiful clusters of fruit. Most of these trees have been named after their owners' family businesses such as Cay Sung family restaurant (Yet Kieu street, ward 2), Cay Xoai family restaurant (ward IV), Cay Xoai beer house, Cay Vu Sua coffee shop (Ninh Thanh ward), Vuon Cau coffee shop and hotel (ward IV)...

These fruit trees in the heart of the city have created a diverse and rich urban landscape for the province in terms of street trees, creating shade and contributing significantly to the development of a green, environmentally friendly, livable Tay Ninh city.
