Mr. Tran Van Hiep in Hamlet 2, Soc Trang ward switched from rice to growing lotus for tubers for high economic efficiency.

In Hamlet 2, Soc Trang ward, Mr. Tran Van Hiep's household is one of the typical households that converted rice-growing land to lotus growing, bringing higher economic efficiency than rice growing.

To take advantage of the low-lying fields, Mr. Hiep learned and studied the experience of growing lotus for tubers and decided to switch to growing lotus on an area of over 20 hectares. After about 4 months of care, the lotus field yielded tubers, with an average selling price of 20,000-25,000 VND/kg. After deducting expenses, he still made a profit of more than 10 million VND/acre, a much higher income than growing rice. In addition, he also had additional income from lotus seeds and lotus mirrors.

Mr. Tran Van Hiep shared: "The technique of growing lotus for tubers is not difficult, but it is necessary to pay attention to the lotus variety; pay attention to the care, fertilization, and prevention of pests and diseases at different stages to help the plant grow and develop, ensuring the quality of the lotus tubers."

Ms. Nguyen Thi Cam Nhung in Hamlet 4 has achieved success when she decided to invest in building a greenhouse with an area of nearly 2,000m2 to grow clean vegetables according to the hydroponic model, VietGAP standards. Currently, she hydroponically grows many types of vegetables such as lettuce, spinach, kale, water spinach, herbs... in a safe organic direction. Every day, Ms. Nhung supplies the market with about 100kg of various vegetables, earning over 2 million VND.

Ms. Cam Nhung shared: “Vegetables grown in an isolated hydroponic environment are rarely infected with pests and diseases. On the other hand, the continuous water supply helps the vegetables stay fresh and preserve longer; the yield is higher than traditional soil cultivation. Hydroponic vegetables do not contain pesticide residues, so they are safe and favored by consumers.”

The coriander growing model on an area of 2,000m2 of Mr. Huynh Van Luan's household, residing in Hamlet 6, also brings in higher income than growing rice. Thanks to his diligence and care, his coriander grows well, bringing in a stable income many times higher than growing rice.

Mr. Luan said that coriander is easy to grow, has few pests and diseases, can be harvested many times after planting once, and can be harvested after about 3 months of planting. When harvesting, traders come to buy the coriander at an average price of 15,000-20,000 VND/kg, bringing him a daily income of over 1.5 million VND (excluding expenses).

To support farmers in changing their production models and improving economic efficiency on their cultivated areas, Mr. Le Anh Tuan, Head of the Economic, Infrastructure and Urban Department of Soc Trang Ward, said: “Soc Trang Ward encourages farmers to develop production models according to the value chain through developing collective economy, cooperatives, as well as applying modern technology to production, processing and consumption of agricultural products. In the coming time, the Economic, Infrastructure and Urban Department will continue to coordinate with relevant departments to advise the Ward People's Committee to support the transfer of science and technology, training for replication, and organizing product consumption linkages for farmers.”
