After storm No. 10, the large ditch in the area of Mr. V.D.L's house (34 years old, Tay Phuong, Hanoi ) rose in water, and there were many mosquitoes. On October 1, Mr. L had a headache, pain in the eye sockets and joint pain. He went to the doctor and tested positive for Dengue fever.
Mr. L was prescribed treatment and monitored at home by the doctor. However, after 3 days, he still had headaches, nausea, and his condition did not improve, so his family took him straight to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases for treatment.
When admitted to the Department of Parasitology, Mr. L was in a state of mucosal congestion, headache, nausea, obesity, platelet count reduced to only 21 G/L, pleural effusion and abdominal fluid. With obesity, his prognosis was quite severe, with a high risk of complications.

Mr. NVC (56 years old, in Lang Son ) was transferred to the Emergency Department, in a state of severe Dengue fever, with shock.
Mr. C had a high fever with chills, headache, body aches, nausea and vomiting since October 4. After visiting a local medical facility, the test confirmed positive for dengue fever. He was hospitalized for 4 days but did not improve, so he was transferred to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
At the Emergency Department, Mr. C showed signs of infection, rapid breathing requiring oxygen support, platelet count down to 5 G/L, white blood cell count 3.7 G/L, bilateral pleural effusion and abdominal effusion. He received intensive treatment and his health improved.
Like Mr. C, Mr. TVX (63 years old, in Hung Yen) had a high fever, severe headache, and body aches for 5 days before being hospitalized. Although he took fever-reducing medicine, the symptoms did not improve, accompanied by bleeding gums and black stools, so he was taken to a medical facility near his home for examination.
Here, he was diagnosed with Dengue fever, hospitalized for 3 days, the disease did not improve, the doctors transferred him to the Central Hospital for Tropical Diseases. His platelet count dropped to only 8 G/L, the risk of bleeding was very high. After 4 days of treatment, his fever stopped, his headache subsided, his health stabilized, and his platelet count gradually increased.
According to Dr. Nguyen Thanh Binh, Deputy Head of the Department of Parasitology and Virology, fortunately, Mr. X did not show any signs of blood concentration, was detected early, and treated promptly, so no unfortunate complications occurred.
According to Dr. Binh, all of the critically ill patients were treated intensively and closely monitored every three hours upon admission. Thanks to early detection and treatment, all of the patients have progressed well and are stable.
"In recent days, storms and flooding in many northern localities have increased the risk of dengue fever outbreaks and many other infectious diseases. Stagnant water in the environment is an ideal condition for Aedes aegypti mosquitoes to breed, causing mosquito density to increase rapidly if not handled promptly," said Dr. Binh.
To prevent dengue fever, doctors recommend that people need to kill mosquito larvae, clean up their living environment, cover water containers, sleep under mosquito nets, use mosquito repellent and spray chemicals regularly. In addition, getting vaccinated against dengue fever is a safe and effective measure licensed by the Ministry of Health.
For people with chronic diseases (diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney failure, immunodeficiency, etc.), obesity, people over 60 years old, or pregnant women are at high risk, prone to serious complications when having dengue fever. Therefore, when unusual symptoms such as high fever that does not subside, headache, nausea, nosebleeds, gums, subcutaneous bleeding or prolonged diarrhea appear, people need to go to a medical facility for timely examination and treatment to avoid dangerous complications.
