In districts with large passion fruit areas such as Mang Yang, Chu Pah, Ia Grai, Dak Doa... traders come to buy at prices of only 4,000 - 5,000 VND/kg for grade 2 and grade 3 passion fruit.
A few months ago, passion fruit was purchased at about 14,000 VND/kg for normal lemons and 35,000 VND/kg for lemons selected for export.
The falling price of passion fruit has caused many farmers to suffer heavy losses. Many households are even considering destroying their passion fruit gardens to switch to growing other crops.

According to Mr. Luu Trung Nghia - Director of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Gia Lai province, currently fresh passion fruit meets export standards, the price is still at 22,000 - 25,000 VND/kg. But the current price of lime is low.
The reason is that the passion fruit variety grown in the area has very few beautiful fruit, while the quality of grade 2 and grade 3 is high. This has reduced the income of the people.
According to Mr. Tran Xuan Khai - Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Gia Lai province, Vietnamese passion fruit is currently exported to countries such as the EU, USA, Japan, Korea, Australia... but mainly to China.
At this time, China's Guangdong and Guangxi provinces are in the main harvest season of passion fruit. In addition, many localities in China have recently suffered from storms and floods, reducing people's incomes and thus reducing purchasing power, leading to a drop in passion fruit prices.
Rapid growth in acreage can lead to oversupply, leading to price declines, directly affecting growers' income. According to statistics, Gia Lai province currently has 4,500 hectares of passion fruit. By 2025, the acreage is planned to increase to about 25,000 hectares.
In 2022, Mang Yang district had 382 hectares of passion fruit, by March 2023 it had increased to nearly 500 hectares. In 2016, Chu Pah district had a few dozen hectares of passion fruit, now it has increased to over 500 hectares.
Faced with the massive planting of passion fruit, the People's Committee of Gia Lai province has issued recommendations to localities to research, survey, and evaluate the area of crop conversion from coffee to passion fruit, to avoid massive conversion, especially in areas where climate conditions, land resources, and water sources are not guaranteed.
Just about 5 months after the warning, passion fruit prices fell dramatically, causing farmers who invested in the crop to suffer losses.
