The Guardian newspaper on November 24 quoted the US Air Force as saying that many strange UAVs were discovered at three British bases in the Suffolk and Norfolk regions, but their intentions are unknown.
Accordingly, small UAVs were detected from November 20-22 at Royal Air Force bases, including Feltwell base in Norfolk and Lakenhealth and Mildenhall bases in Suffolk.
The US Air Force (USAF), which operates the three bases, said it was unclear at this time whether the drones had hostile intent. The USAF declined to comment on whether the bases had activated their defenses, but said it had the right to defend them.
A USAF spokesman in Europe confirmed the presence of UAVs at the three bases, with different sizes and numbers from November 20-22.
“Those UAVs were actively monitored and base leaders determined that none of the intrusions impacted base personnel or critical infrastructure,” the spokesperson said.
"In the interest of operational security, we do not discuss our specific force protection measures but reserve the right to defend our base. We continue to monitor airspace and are working with host nation authorities and mission partners to ensure the safety of base personnel, facilities and assets," the USAF spokesperson added.
On the host country side, a spokesman for the British Ministry of Defense said they take the threat seriously and maintain robust measures at defence sites, including anti-UAV capabilities. "We will not comment further on security procedures," the spokesman said.
