Implementing digital transformation is helping the people of Ha Tinh, the land of specialty pomelos, build the image of modern farmers and continuously develop their production and business.
Ngoc Boi (Huong Trach commune) is one of the villages with the largest area of Phuc Trach pomelo production in Huong Khe district. In December 2021, 19 farming households in Ngoc Boi village joined together and established a professional association for Phuc Trach pomelo growers. During its operation, the association has effectively fulfilled its "mission" of bringing together pomelo farmers for activities, exchanging information, and applying new techniques to production.
The Phuc Trach pomelo growers' professional association has been developed into a branch association, meeting the needs of its development process.
Techniques for caring for pomelo orchards, such as selecting varieties, preparing the soil, tending, fertilizing, and pest and disease control, are regularly learned and exchanged among farmers. In particular, the combination of experience and modern technology is applied to production to create delicious, attractive, and safe products. Many members have become wealthy, earning hundreds of millions of dong annually from pomelo cultivation.
To keep pace with the development of the digital economy in agriculture, at the beginning of the 2023 harvest season, the association developed into the Ngoc Boi Village Digital Branch. Mr. Phan Xuan Hien – Head of the Ngoc Boi Digital Branch – shared: “The branch was formed with the goal of building a modern-day farmer. It focuses on producing Phuc Trach pomelos that meet organic standards and facilitates sales through e-commerce to increase their value. Upon establishment, members also contributed to a fund aimed at supporting members facing greater difficulties in developing their production.”
The branch's activities are being digitized.
In the 2023 production season, the entire branch had 15.1 hectares of Phuc Trach pomelos, of which 11.6 hectares were harvested, with a yield of approximately 11.2 tons/ha, a total production of 174 tons, and an estimated income of 3.48 billion VND (an average of 128.9 million VND/household). Right from the start of the harvest season, the branch held a meeting of all members to assess the yield and quality of the product. This provided a basis for evaluating the market, determining prices, and facilitating connections with buyers.
Previously, households sold their produce to traders in bulk, purchasing entire orchards at once. However, this year, 22 out of 26 members have switched to promoting their pomelos on digital platforms.
Mr. Phan Xuan Hien uses a smartphone to take photos and videos of products and promote them on social media platforms.
Mr. Phan Xuan Hien further shared that, in his family alone, out of more than 9,000 pomelos this year, over 8,000 have been sold through social media promotion and marketing. Most other members also have a sales rate of over 70% through e-commerce channels.
In particular, the Ngoc Boi branch of the association has received training from the German GIZ organization in collaboration with the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center (Department of Agriculture and Rural Development) on techniques for caring for pomelo trees; the process of producing pomelos organically, steps for composting, and pest and disease control using natural resources without chemical products; and updating production processes on the "Phuc Trach Pomelo" application. Last September, 11 members of the branch received certificates of organic certification for the first year (covering an area of 4 hectares) from the TQC CGLOBRAL Quality Testing and Certification Center ( Hanoi ).
The Department of Agriculture and Rural Development and the TQC CGLOBRAL Quality Testing and Certification Center awarded first-year organic certification to several households in the Ngoc Boi branch.
According to Dinh Cong Tiu, Chairman of the Huong Khe District Farmers' Association: Although newly formed, the Ngoc Boi branch has operated quite effectively, building on the foundation laid by the existing professional association. The establishment and operation of the branch have gradually transformed farmers' working methods from traditional to modern, based on digital technology and the application of information systems and software to promote the specialty Phuc Trach pomelo product throughout the country.
This model is one of the local highlights in the movement of farmers competing to excel in production and business, as well as making a practical contribution to building advanced new rural areas and model residential areas...
